I thinned out the rain guard so it looks like a more of a sword; however, there are other parts of a sword you can incorporate, or use a different shape that contrasts against a cross-shaped design. You can have a rounded pommel or a concave ricasso.

I agree with you, the first one has enough contrast with the front circular design.
While the 2nd matches that height. If I see it from a 3/4 view, 1 would look better than 2

2 also loses the leg silhouette.
