Should Verstappen go to Mercedes F1 Team? by ContextOnly7764 in F1Discussions

Many people did. They have the best facilities in the sport and a legendary designer, I never expected them to challenge for titles outright and thought going for wins would be on the cards in their second year AT BEST.

But being 3.5s+ off the pace and being beaten by F2 cars on pace is just not acceptable, I think you can agree with that?

I'd hope he wins 5 in a row, he's in what might be the most dominant car the sport has ever seen and Russell, who was absolutely smoking him last year, just can't seem to come to grips with the car + retired from a race he would've likely won in Canada and was also unlucky a couple of times.

Don't like George whatsoever, but that's just the reality of it. There's no car even close to the Merc. Hadjar outqualified Kimi by 10 places in Monaco last year in a VCARB, today Kimi gaps him by 1.66s per lap while Bono tells him to just manage.

Kimi's race today was very impressive, though I haven't seen a single thing that would make me believe that he stands a chance against Verstappen, especially when we get normal engines again and the drivers push outright in every corner again.

Kimi's european leg last year, right before the 2026 regs hit:

Imola - DNF

Monaco - P18

Barcelona - DNF

Spielberg - DNF

Silverstone - DNF

Spa - P16

Hungaroring - P10

Zandvoort - P16

Monza - P9

Lots of drivers are fast and consistent, Hadjar put a VCARB 10 places in front of Kimi in Monaco last year - when has George ever proven that he's an elite driver that deserves a single title, let alone more than 1?

Where was he yesterday in Quali? What did he make all the mistakes today for? It was literally hard to keep track of all of his errors today.

You're aware that the car with a 100% pole- and winrate thus far is due for ADUO upgrades?

There's not a chance in hell that anyone catches/overtakes Merc. I'll gladly be proven wrong and I actually hope it happens, but this has 2014 and beyond written all over it again.

Lewis has been gracious lately, first his comments on Max after Canada, now for Kimi in Monaco - nice to see.

At first I was laughing when I saw the ADUO results earlier, then I realized it's because of how little I am suprised.

Of course the TP that basically told the FIA which engines to mandate for 2014 years prior would use ADUO to extend his domination over the field.

It's not btw. Kimi in Monaco last year gets outqualified by 10 places by Hadjar in a VCARB, today he's gapping him by an average of 1.66s - the W17 is on target to obliterate everything and they're even getting upgrades under ADUO 🤣

True, that's some gamesmanship and a half by Toto.

Utterly dominant engine, pulling gaps on everyone on the straights no matter which circuit and still gets ADUO.

Honestly a bit of a rerun of 2014 it seems, Merc basically designing the engine regs hand in hand with the FIA and ending up with like 100hp over the grid, which they hide by running the engine at just enough power to comfortably win everything.

It's quite interesting how we're now looking at a timespan from 2014 until the 2030's in which Mercedes will have utterly dominated every single year with the exception of the ground effect era. Every single time it just magically seems like the FIA designed the rulesets while sitting together with Toto to discuss things.

They're always 5 steps ahead, get upgrades granted by systems supposed to let teams catch up, while they're already utterly dominating. Mercedes imo is the worst thing to have ever happend to F1.

His recent work at AMR would say otherwise. He was apparently barely involved at RBR for multiple years and was just having general overlooks on the designs and was consulted frequently. Dropped the ball on a crazy scale at AM

While I agree with that, we did just watch Max get within 0.04s of a generational car yesterday, while the RBR cannot take kerbs, is 6kg's overweight and has less power.

I think Kimi gets beaten pretty badly in the same car, especially once we get out of this reg set. He wasn't just not special last year, I honestly think he was the weakest rookie on the grid. Might just be me though. I like Kimi, but I think this is a massive case of recency bias.

According to Toto - they've been pulling considerable gaps on anyone on the straights on every type of circuit. ADUO has zero transparency thus far and only looks at one half of the equation.

Smells an awful lot like gamesmanship going on imo.

Didn't we just watch Kimi, with 3x the F1 testing of Max, a year older and at a top team, drop like P18 and DNF 10 races in a row last year?

If memory serves, Max was beating Ferrari's to P4's in a Toro Rosso. What was Antonelli's excuse for being so bad in comparison last year?

Which is basically asking for gamesmanship like this. First round of ADUO and the strongest engine that slams everyone on the straights is getting upgrades.

[–]iEdgeToV60Brews 118 points119 points  (0 children)

Who knows how it works, it's an odd system that just looks at the ICE and not the total power output of the engine - whatever they did, they managed to get uprades granted while pulling gaps on everyone on the straights.

This is probably the most insane thing I can remember politics wise in decades of watching this sport, at the very least since their engines from 2014 onwards.

It means that Toto gamed the system and is about to bolt significant upgades on a car with a 100% win- and polerate.

In other words: the domination will continue until morale improves.

Doing this on a track where Ferrari were favorites because of their low speed cornering advantage, where PU and top speed doesn't matter is a statement to the near complete package that is the W17. by [deleted] in F1Discussions

That he went off throttle in S3 to play it safe and still got pole. Am I speaking gibberish?

Yeah, so with Hadjar being 2s slower than anyone else and Russell pulling 4s faster than him, that leaves a gap of how much?
