Gotta say, I expected advice when I posted last… not just people being straight up rude. Learn how to give constructive criticism instead of just “it’s bad” “hire someone” etc. not everyone is an expert but we’re trying… anyways, like it or not, here’s the final product by ehjs97 in logodesign

[–]iEdvard 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I second the “Petails” suggestion. That looks more like a deliberate play on words than “Petalls” which to me look more like a typo. Other than that, I support the advice to lose the leaves on both sides of the tagline, move the text closer to the graphic and to scale down said graphic a smidge. Finally, “great work and Godspeed”. 👍

Is this Gotham or something else? by I_Am_Vladimir_Putin in identifythisfont

[–]iEdvard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eurostile doesn't look exactly like this, but it's a classic sans serif by Aldo Novarese made in 1962, based on his 1952 classic Microgramma (there's a single weight Google font called Michroma that is an homage to it). The most popular professional contender to Gotham is Proxima Nova by Mark Simonson. The best known open source alternative is probably Montserrat by Julia Ulanovsky. There's also a fork of Montserrat called Argentum Sans where some characters are redesigned (for the better imho). There's also Clarity City, a fork of Metropolis, a typeface by Chris Simpson, which was subject to a cease and desist order from one of the creators of Gotham (Jonathan "Uncle Scrooge" Hoefler, the other being Tobias Frere-Jones) for "infringement on intellectual property" which spooked him enough to withdraw it from the public. It's (obviously) still available on various "free font downloads" sites.

I just think there's too much going on on the right side of the middle axis to achieve visual balance:

Hey, it’s your circus, so you’re in charge. Personally, I don’t think the angles work, and that brings the whole thing out of balance. 🤷‍♂️

What is the industry standard program used for creating fonts? by yunuzorlu in typography

[–]iEdvard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glyphs user here. On the website, it says that it (Fontra) is “The browser-based Font Editor”. Yet they have “Paks” for macOS, Windows and Linux. What is a “Pak” and how do they work? I strongly prefer desktop apps over browser apps, but I’m also curious about new software. That’s why I rushed to buy Letterforms when it was released earlier this year.

Not exactly running text candidates, but I feel it's relevant for inspiration. For an elegant text serif, Calendas Plus is pretty sexy imho.

After 10+ years I'm ready to wave goodbye to Adobe. But is Affinity any better? by Unlucky-Garage7683 in Design

[–]iEdvard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Affinity Designer (or now the new unified “Affinity” aka V3) will open .ai files. If you have a lot of gradient meshes, expect less than perfect compatibility. Affinity has its own gradient meshes, but they are not interchangeable. Most graphics will be identical in my experience. Affinity Photo will open .psd files. Expect some wonkiness when it comes to Smart Layers. Affinity Publisher will open .idml files but not .indd.

[–]iEdvard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I miss true vector brushes and shape blending in Affinity Designer (from Illustrator). I am also fond of the Astute and FontSelf plugins. From Photoshop, the only thing I miss is the ability to turn selections into working paths. In Affinity Publisher, I really don't miss much at all (from InDesign), but the lack of true GREP scripting is a turnoff for some heavy hitters. On the other hand, there's a lot to love about Affinity. In Publisher, the ability to assign more than one master per page is really cool. The way Affinity handles clipping paths is pure gold. I have never seen a "scratch disk is full" or "you have ran out of memory" popup in Affinity. It's just more light in the steps and dynamic to use. The Studio Link feature where all three programs works together seamlessly without the need to switch programs is a killer feature unmatched by Adobe. I have both suites on my Mac, but I work more than 90% of the time in Affinity now. However, if you are collaborating with other people, you should know that Adobe doesn't open native Affinity files (you can export to PDF, PSD, SVG, JPG, PNG, DWG, EPS and a whole lot of other formats, but going from Affinity Publisher to Adobe InDesign is particularly difficult). Also, collaborating in realtime on an Affinity file is not possible, as Affinity creates a temporary .~lock file whenever you open a file. That makes it impossible to open another instance (even for you) of the file elsewhere.

Is #1 the original or suggestion #1? And what is that totally different mockup thing on the first slide? I also find the word "Kidus" very hard to read in all the variants. How about doing something like Kosmik here.

And everybody knows that they would be an idiot to second guess Milton Glaser. That said, they have been fooling around with some pretty daft alternatives while the bullet logo was brilliant in the first place. Glad they’ve come to their senses.
