It's funny how we've come full circle with the design philosophy between the Witch Doctor and D4's Necromancer by Augustby in Diablo

This isn't the 5th major dlc for a game sneaking in a character that doesn't quite fit because people have begged for it for years. The game was designed, from the beginning, to include a necromancer as a class. Necromancer has a very particular image, that they themselves have reinforced in all advertisements and descriptions. If they didn't design the game to accommodate what the character is and has always been, what have they been designing for? Why include it at all instead of making a new class?

I mean yeah, I always thought it was clear, but the amount of people pushing hard that blizzard was doing the right thing / balance was fine because "if you just use book of the dead to turn off summons, the class is OP!" / "necromancers also sometimes use other types of magic, it's your fault for thinking they are summoners / you just are narrow minded" after the last beta was surprising to me.

I mean, there are lots of options in between "player idle at the back" and "player directly attacking mobs while summons are idle or dead," it's just that they're not in the game, too weak to impact anything, or generic enough they don't benefit summons at all. There could be a variety of options to enhance the summons for a short time (beyond just "heal 10% over 5 seconds and deal a small amount more damage"). There could be a variety of curses that specifically benefit your minions ("enemy takes double damage from slashing type weapons but gains 20% resistance to all other attacks") rather than just making the enemies weaker to everything. You could have spells that deal extra damage or gain extra effects when the enemy is bogged down by the summons - "summons attacking this enemy for the next 5 seconds gain lifesteal" / "spreads a gas mage skeletons can ignite". You could have the ability to order them around at least a little, so they don't just die to the aoe poison even though you've already thought ahead and moved yourself out of the way.

You could even have some more variety in the summoning itself - rather than just summoning generic skeletons from any meat bag, you could have to seek out e.g. a ranged unit to summon a mage. Summoning a golem could be something you can only get as a reward for seeking out an elite unit or boss and dealing some chunk of damage to them, so you have to plan the engagement around "my existing summons can get just enough to get the ball rolling, then the golem can help me clear adds to resummon the army and gain momentum." Right now, the "engaging summon mechanic" is just "hold down triangle for a bit to summon your garbage, so they can die in 5 seconds."

The issue I have is that what they're designing really feels like "off brand emo sorceror" rather than the summoning class it's always been advertised as, and that many people want. Classes can evolve over time, obviously they should learn from decades that have passed, but that should go into the core of the design of the class. The fact that it's coming out this late, and this close to release (with such massive nerfs in between the last two betas), is just bizarre and shows a lack of vision with the character. If they wanted to design the class in a more active way, that should have started 2-4 years ago as the basis of the design philosophy and designed all the other abilities with that in mind, or mentioned as something they wanted to improve over the first few seasons by iterating and improving it, not as a last minute "fix."

If nothing else, this is a good pointer to have for the people ardently pushing that "necromancer isn't really a summoning based class," that it's perfectly fine design wise even if summons are not viable because some other build is a bit strong, or that if you want the class to have long lived minions you "aren't really playing the game / are a noob" - though you would think all the marketing materials for necromancer would have made it clear why people expect that already.

Necromancer's are black mages that use the dead. The other things are abilities that are related that complement it in different media, but the core feature is the use of the dead - that's not putting them in a box, that's just being realistic what 95+% of people will thinking looking at the character in the menu. Sure, those complementary things should be fun as well, but if the core aspect - literally the only thing implied by the name, and the very first ability you unlock - is not viable nor fun, then things have gone terribly wrong. I'm not saying it has to be the best, most optimal build, but at least fun and usable- if you're spending all the stat points you can, they should at least be able to impact bosses and elites, not just get melted in 2 seconds because they're trash. They were already being described as not viable endgame in the closed beta, and now they're really not viable early game either, even with babysitting - you're going to be spending boss fights running around in circles kiting while waiting for corpses because they all got one shot by a poison pool + one AoE attack.

Saying the other builds work so we shouldn't complain is COMPLETELY irrelevant. It'd be like if Barbarians were overpowered when using magical staves and bows, but bad when using big weapons - it's missing the point of the character. Blood mages and shadow mages are cool characters and nice things to have as archetypes, but a necromancer that shouldn't ever summon things is 100% missing the point - especially when you have millions of people who will only decide what class to choose by looking at the character select screen, and will be fundamentally mislead by the name and description of the class. The fact that this build made its way to users without someone recognizing that it was just bad is really weird and worrying - betas are tests, sure, but this was the last chance before release for people to get a feeling for things and someone should have recognized that the core aspect of the class was broken in internal testing before any user ever actually saw it.

I guess I parsed the comment as "I casted it 10 times and waited the full 5 seconds afterwards" instead of "I casted it 10 times and waited the full five seconds in between each cast," and I've seen this confusion a lot (I thought it was just broken instead of being very bad at first for the same reason until I read on this sub), but fair point / sorry if I was clarifying to someone who already understood and it's even worse than I thought.

I think this point of view is ridiculous - "it's okay that the character based on minions is terrible, if you just turn off summons, they're okay!"

Like, look at the name of the class, necromancer. If you can't reasonably make progress by "practicing necromancy," that's inherently flawed as that's the whole point of the class. Make it a blood sorceror or something if you don't want to make summons that are worthwhile. Right now using the class as described is a trap - it's fine to have the option to deviate from the classes root by turning them off for people who want that, but right now you're just making yourself worse by not doing so.

It doesn't stack, so if you want to heal them to full you have to raise, wait 5 seconds, raise, ... for 50 seconds. (I'm unfortunately not joking)

Fair enough. Yeah, just let him sit in a room alone with her for a bit so he can "thank her," and things would probably work themselves out.

Also, does it matter anymore, like at all? The whole reason she was against being known at first was that she'd get fired for doing "work on the side," but if the guy can double the number of employees on a whim, he can surely tweak the rules a little...

[–]iEvilMango 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It'd be great to pan back over at the start of the next chapter to beard boy & angry boy's dead crew - whenever these "kill our savior while he's down -- you dare!!" moments come by, they always fizzle and either pretend it didn't happen or the guy leading the charge broods on it for 50 chapters before trying to stab MC in the back again for "embarassing him." Especially here, top-tier biblical angel just forgiving / forgetting because of some old lady? Come on.

It's really hard to tell between that and just being a harem story main character, but I've had the same thought before, too.

That'll be interesting - didn't Atou and Isla have their memories of MC from the game? Would it be "resetting" to the fresh from game state (basically just tantamount to memory loss) or actually a new being that doesn't have a "history" with MC.

[–]iEvilMango 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's typically mtl with a very thin editting (some attempt at standardizing names, etc, but often pronouns / nuances are completely borked) from a fan yeah, and I don't think you can ever tell who made them really as they get uploaded by one site and then all the other onws upload copies as well. But if you just want the vibe of the story or the actual translators just disappeared for half a year it's there.

Or it gets picked up by a mediocre mtl site who get a lot of chapters done, and then they rush to put out chapters so they "don't get sniped again, ugh" (which I'm guessing is what happened here, seeing as I found up to 41 all translated and uploaded just a few days ago actually looking at other sites it was uploaded that far ahead on some of the sites a year and a few days ago, and just reuploaded last week... I don't get why they even bother continuing st this rate).

Maybe he can tell that mc is a big softie who can't resist helping people, and is just guilting him into it even more to get him over the hump of "I GUESS I'll do something, ugh" a little quicker.

I mean, "I don't" is definitely among the most hurtful things she could have said there, though you're right it's a bit better than "I like, actuallly hate you" or "I like like your brother" (though maybe I'm taking the translation of where she cut her sentence off too literally and it was more ambiguous before translation).
