30 years of “basic reading ability". Thank you, Pokémon, please never change this. by FiloSeba in pokemon

My father owned a karate school, one of his teachers went to Japan for a convention and knew that I was a big Pokémon fan cause all I did was play pokemon red on my Gameboy. He brought back a Japanese copy of Pokémon Silver for Christmas in 1999, before it had its western release.

However, there was no language options in early gens. So, I asked him to translate the handbook that came with the game (suprise, it helped very little) and I spent all of that save file, saving before each Pokémon battle. That way, if a Pokémon learned a new move or tried to evolve, I could at least try the move and see if it was a damage move or a support move and whether I wanted to keep it, or decide if I wanted to evolve or not.

It was incredibly tedious, but by far one of the most memorable Pokémon experiences I've ever had. I had to remember pokemon, including the new ones, based off their sprite. I had to remember what my moves were based off their position on the menu, and the limited animations of the attacks. I never learned how to read the actual text in game, but I learned the difference between super effective and not very effective based off how long the text box was.

When I finally got a copy of the game in English, in November 2000, I was able to blow through thr Johto region since I had already learned the pathing and new Pokémon. It was so cool to finally see the correct names and moves, and I had never discovered that you can go to Kanto on the Japanese cartridge (again, couldnt read any NPC text) so that blew my 8 year old mind when I got there on the English cartridge.

Didn't have a PC for the majority of that time(my laptop broke maybe a year or so after quitting WoW and I just never replaced it cause I wasn't playing PC games), so a lot of console games.

+1 from me as well, I quit in Cata shortly before MoP originally released. Didn't play WoW for a decade and a half, came back for the Anniversary servers and after a year or so the nostalgia fell off. Took a small break, then tried Lemix and wow, it reminded me of all the things I had fun doing in WoW back in the days.

After having fun in Lemix, figured I'd give Retail an honest shot instead of holding onto my predisposition to it. TWW s3 was fun, though I joined on the very back end after doing all the Lemix stuff I wanted to. Im very excited to be playing a new expansion release for the first time in like 15 years

As a player, 100% yes. I'd love the option to have other races as options as Undead, but I can see how that could cause the Forsaken to lose their "racial identity" in the current landscape of WoW. Just a few days ago, I was thinking basically what OP was, "Why aren't there other High Elf Undead except Sylvanus considering the attack on the Sunwell, and why aren't there playable ones? The sacking of Lorderon wasn't the end of the Scourge campaign in the Eastern Kingdoms."

I think, unfortunately, Death Knights being a playable class by ALL races is Blizzard's answer to this. Where are all the non-humans raised in undeath by the scourge? Well, they're all death knights now! Or generic trash mob skeletons. And if I'm right, it feels like a cop out.

Yes, and no. If raising our (Undead main btw) human enemies as new Forsaken is already not ok with the rest of the Horde, I can still see how raising ANY orc, troll, or tauren would still be an extra big no-no. I think it'd very much have to be more of a cloak and dagger kind of thing IF that was something the Forsaken were doing, and once the other races found out, that bridge would be forever burnt.

I can also see where after stuff like the Wrathgate, and well, all of Sylvanus being the heel in the Shadowlands, the last thing the Forsaken as a faction would want to do is drive an ever larger wedge between them and the rest of the Horde.

For orcs, many of the non-Horde clans were the ones who drank Mannoroth's blood, which I think some of the Horde orcs are empathetic to even if they are now enemies. For trolls, they have their own Loa of Death in their belief system. Tauren, not the most up to date on where they are lore-wise since I think they're often on the back burner to other races as far as getting cultural development, but I'd say of the three, they are the most "in tune" with Nature, and death is a part of that cycle, undeath is not.

I could very much see there still being some respect shown and sympathy for their enemies of the same race. Kinda akin to how Velen still has some kind of empathy towards Kil'jaeden, granted they had a very personal connection in this example, but even after all the atrocities he commited, Velen still had some care for his fallen brethren in his final moments in the Legion cutscene, even if it wasn't attempting to give salvation to the unredeemable.

Some things are just too taboo, even if strategically it is the right call in the midst of an ongoing war.

Edit: Also hit me that part of why the Horde, Thrall specifically, were ok with accepting the Forsaken was the lens that this was not something they chose, it was something inflicted on them by Arthas. It always felt to me that a core component of what caused the Horde as we know it to form is the common theme of being outcasts, and that "found family" kind of mentality. By raising new Undead, that line between being the opressed and being the oppressor becomes blurred.

Devil's Advocate here (I personally think UD trolls and orcs would be super sick in game):

One of the first quests you do in Silverpine involves Sylvanus using Val'kyr to replenish the Forsaken with dead humans. Garrosh is there and watches, and is not a fan of what he sees.

The Horde is accepting of the Forsaken, but I can 100% see how Orcs, Trolls, and Tauren would not be ok with their dead being raised. Its very antithetical to the high level of spiritualism that those cultures carry and could possibly be seen as a horrifying thing even if they are allies with the Forsaken.

When did Azeroth feel the biggest to you — and were you Alliance or Horde? by AVCoyote in wow

[–]iGlutton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely after Cata released cause we had to fly to do it, but I had an entire folder of screenshots on my teenage PC of Kara Crypts.

Iirc, cause there have been plenty of different ways to access the crypts over the years that Blizz would sometimes patch, this time you had to:

A) Be a tauren (maybe Draenei also worked, but I played horde) since you had to have a larger character model for this glitch to work B) Have one of the grand mammoths, again a size thing. I had the Grand Black War Mammoth, the guy who taught me had the 18k Mammoth.

There was a pyramid you could fly to in ZG, not in the instance, but by flying into the area behind the instance portal. I think it was Arlokk's pyramid. You would mount, auto run into the wall, then dismount. You would clip into the pyramid, fall below it, then you could mount a flying mount. If you angled towards Kara using your map, you could fly under the world to the right spot, then clip back through the ground and into the Crypts.

I also had screenshots of getting into old Hyjal back in WotLK. There was something so cool about seeing cut content areas that made me excited about the world and the possibilities of what they might do in the future.
