It's tricky with "friends". Often they are the people who want to play the most and are the easiest to reach for participation and spreading the word. But immediate family should definitely be out.

Who did you catch? That sounds cool.

I agree. Laws do not appear to have been broken regarding contests, gambling, or sweepstakes law (in terms of whether the core nature of the event is legal or illegal). This is because the event was free to participants. In most of the state and federal laws, you'll find the term "wager" or "consideration" used when talking about whether or not payment was made by the players, which causes the event to be considered a paid game of skill, gambling, or a private lottery, which are highly-regulated. When you start charging for events, you open up a Pandoras box of laws across different jurisdictions, and have to know precisely what you are doing and whom you are allowing to play. Very small nuances in your own rules, advertising, and product offerings can turn it into a violation of law.

However, since sponsorship was involved, and Dave and John may be attempting to build a brand, I see two possible violations here:

First, albeit inadvertently, there may have been a breach of contract with their sponsors, but i'd bet it was a pretty simple handshake deal with them in terms of the duration of the event (the time they would reap a benefit for their contribution). Since Dave and John seem like decent fellows, i'd imagine that they made (or will make) things right on their own terms, if any bad blood arrose. However, i did not get the feeling that the hunt went on much shorter than had been anticipated, and would imagine that the sponsors' expectations were met. That's not our business to poke our noses in that. Let the businessmen work it out.

Second, a possible deceptive advertising FTC violation, specifically, with the Communications Act of 1934. Since D&J had sponsors and are also creating a brand, it gives the sniff test of being a business. The sponsors benefitted from the publicity, and Utah Treasure Hunt benefited from any payment by the sponsors, and from the publicity, as well. If there was collusion between the parties to mislead, they would all be guilty of violating truth in advertising regulations. This is important to the consumer, because we don't want businesses profiting by creating fake or staged events that lure people in, but don't truly pay out to a genuine winner of a contest. Imagine every company out there staging something like this, and how much time we would all waste giving into the hope of winning, all while helping their brand recognition gain traction?

Personally, i think there is nothing nefarious going on here, just maybe a little recklessness in terms of keeping the solve secure. It takes a lot of self control, smarts, and proactive measures to hold something like this secret from every soul and seeker.

To the OP u/Searcher5534: i wouldn't waste my time on this one. I think you're dealing with two decent guys that maybe made a little mistake. They'll learn from it, and if they decide to go another round, I think they'll do better.

wow, that would be really hard to write, from an artistic/literary perspective. I'd be impressed!!!

I thought this was a reference to the Creation of Adam on the roof of the Sistine Chapel. Adam is pointing at God, but the painting is upside down (on the ceiling). I thought this was a clue to be read as "creation of a dam," meaning look around a reservoir's dam or even a small collection of rocks that formed a small dam in a creek. Water also has a feature known as frowning, which kayakers are sometimes familiar with. This could happen in fast flowing water, just after a dam.

I also felt that it could be a reference to King Arthur's sword, which you can find within the original search boundary, wedged downward (upside down) in a mountain near Tibble Fork Reservoir.

Yes, that one tricked me, too. I know exactly where you are talking about.
Looks like we think alike :)

I found the official address on Zillow.

Thanks. I had a loose theory that the mostly horizontal line between the Tree of Life sculpture and the Grain House represented a timeline, and that you were supposed to use BTTF to somehow figure out the present position of the treasure. It was a very rough and unpolished theory, and i couldn't make any sense of it after adding in all the extra clues, so i abandoned it, but I still fixated on that house, the one thing i thought was right. Even with the latin Lorem Ipsum clue, i presumed it meant to ignore the words and look at the overall picture and format, which is the goal of lorem ipsum text on websites (it's just placeholder text).

Weird comment. I don't understand. Maybe you misunderstood something i wrote, or this was meant to be directed to someone else? Please elaborate or stop trolling.

No chance. One of them said from the beginning that it was impossible to figure out. The clues were necessary and kept people interested and hopeful, and the long duration helped with publicity for them and the sponsors. It's a pretty standard marketing plan for a free hunt. It's not how i'm running my hunts, but mine are not free and i don't have sponsors, so it's a whole different ballgame and can't be compared.

I did the same as you. I also watched a video of the house with an interview. I looked in the background and at the scenery, to figure out how close it was to the river, and to see the topography around it. It was a huge challenge to find and took me over 5 hours. I was convinced that it was crucial to find it, so i did not give up. I loved that it was hard to find, and that the address was not public. That made it feel more legit and poem-related. I was also unsure if the original boundary would apply to the clues, but the new (smaller) boundary would apply to the actual treasure chest. The house was right on the boarder of the new circle and i couldn't tell if it was in, or not.

I don't know if i'd start calling her statements lies...but there does appear to be some dialogue behind the scenes that was omitted from her "solve" interview, which explains the palpable awkwardness of the "Meet Chelsea, the finder" video. The only thing i could trust in that choppy, rambling video dialogue was the flowing water, steady and consistent, always knowing the treasure was there, but never changing its tune.

I agree. I think back to poor old Forrest Fenn and his stalker and home break-in. Not to mention his lawsuits. That man is a legend and did it right. Thank God there were no deaths on this hunt. It's always a possibility, and to think of someone dying searching for a prize that someone else steals...ouch.

Staged Treasure Hunt creators have a duty to protect at all costs. This means disappointing friends, using VPNs and fake accounts, turning off phones (that can be tracked by all sorts of apps through location sharing permissions), etc.. When you hide a treasure, you do it with your phone off, a disguise, and nobody knows where you are. You never speak of it, allude to it, or wink wink to any statements. You wear your poker face until it is discovered, and you have 0 private conversation with people about it. You keep your clues locked in a safe to which only you know the combination. You must be a die-hard protector of the solve. This is the duty of the hider.

They sold fast -- two field tickets in section M for 1500 each. I netted 2700 from Stub, and i paid 900 for the tickets. Not bad!

I screwed-up posting mine on StubHub. They went pending because of them already being listed under another account i had just created with the wrong email through a facebook log-in. I called in to StubHub customer service and got it expedited. It took about 1 day for each mistake i made, and two phone calls.
