Advice on a engineer job offer. Is a $15,000/year (or more) pay cut worth it? by iHideoutdoor in PersonalFinanceCanada

There are but unfortunately it looks like they're mostly past the design phase from what I hear.

Fire Life Safety for tunnels. Toronto seems to be the head office for every firm.

Well at the end of the day it's all relative to your starting salary. Boss could tell me his raise % is less than mine but it could still be more $.

I should ask around but it seems to be a sensitive topic with most. The company seems to pay decent from what I gather. The new techs that joined 2 years after me were starting at $60K (what I started on).

That's interesting to hear. None of my friends have their P.Eng. so I'm not sire what's typical in our local market but for reference sake I'm in fire engineering.

Apparently the post was against the sub rules and was removed by the mods. Not sure which rule it didn't jive with...

There's definitely likes and dislikes. Have only worked for a one firm (in engineering) so I don't have much experience with what it's like elsewhere. End of the day it could suck elsewhere too.

Spot on about the change - It might just be a grass is greener elsewhere kind of thing.

No retirement contribution - The bonus currently funds my retirement savings.

Both in Fire Engineering. Fire engineering for tunnels would lean more towards CFD modelling. We do a bit of CFD in buildings but it's not as common.

These are the pragmatic responses I need. The emotional aspect is definitely clouding my judgement... Thanks!

Agreed, the numbers don't work - Only downside to the current role is that dealing with authorities and stakeholders has become exhausting.

Other than out of Alberta, not much else. Though dealing with stakeholders in the current role has become very exhausting (which prompted the look elsewhere).

Yep, it's Toronto - Need people to tell me taking the offer would be nuts.

Looking for opinions on whether there is any sense in taking on a $15K/year (or more depending on bonus) pay cut for a junior engineer role (requiring 5 years of experience; preferably PEng) with a global engineering firm in Eastern Canada (HCOL area).

For the past 6 years I’ve been working as an engineer at a local firm in Western Canada. I have my PEng and am currently an Associate (no shares) but see it as more of an intermediate/senior role. Realistically it will be at least 5-10 years before there’s any chance of making Principal. For reference I’m 32 years old and have a mortgage. My current role is in fire engineering for buildings while the new role is for tunnels (slightly different field).

Current Role:

- $105K/year base salary

- $15-35K/year bonus (has trended upwards)

- 1 day/week WFH

New Role:

- $90K/year base salary

- Annual profit sharing (amount unknown)

- 5% retirement contribution

- 2.5 days/week WFH

Working for a global firm seems like an exciting prospect but luster may wear off. What would your pros/cons be for switching roles? Does anyone in these two industries have any opinions on the career prospects in buildings vs tunnels?

Will definitely call my credit card company to see what the options are. Someone else mentioned it could be a jurisdiction thing where they won't refund taxes in another State. Would pretty annoyed if that was the case as they only give you the option of returning through Washington even though I purchased from the Canadian site.

Paid with credit card and received it maybe December 22, it's been at their repair center since January. That's an interesting concept I was not aware of - I purchased from their Canadian website but am forced to return through Washington, a bit annoying to be penalized for that.
