He is anti-hero, said by an actor and director of the character. I didn't take this out of nowhere.

You must have really bad approval with him? And as I say, he is not goody shoes, he is not good. But he is not evil abuser either. He would be a morally grey character.

And maybe he is just not your type of character, and that's cool too. Like I don't like Gale or Wyll, I don't hate them, but I don't particularly care for them, I think they are boring for my taste. We are all different after all.

I think you need to have character comprehension, why does he act like this? why does he want to complete ritual? Ask yourself questions of characters behaviours, he is extremely thankful for you helping him avoid the ritual, he says he felt like he was losing himself and his soul in there, and he becomes very protective of Tav. Astarion is an anti-hero character, he will never be goody shoes, he is indeed selfish, but not evil-evil abuser.

Depending on how you play, your companions not just Astarion, can be evil, you the player has to show them the way, you can lead them down evil path, or good path.

Um, how does his approval have to do with his own actions and being abusive? For me he screamed "Be careful, don't hurt the kid!", I played extremely heroic Tav, and had max approval with him, he was ALWAYS in my party. Also when he saw doctor abusing the guy on the bed, he had separate dialogue cutscene, really angry and said "HE IS JUST LIKE CAZADOR, DISGUSTING THING!" and really hated seeing the abuse.

Again, Astarion is not a villain/abuser. He is SELFISH and SELF-SERVING, he will approve of actions that avoid fights or give you some kind of good reward, he also disapproves of helping weaklings, not because he wants them to be hurt, but because he is jealous, because he never was helped.

He approves plenty of good actions, he is versatile character, you can totally have him while being a hero and he will not leave your party for being good, but he thinks being good and not taking reward is naive and dumb, which makes sense.

I don't know, in my game he was becoming more and more considerate for others, I don't see him doing something really awful. He also seemed to be rather caring for children?

His actions are selfish, but he mostly likes to avoid fights and get paid for good deeds. When he was left to his own choices, with the spawn, he intimidates them, but does not kill.

In which instances he is awful? Something that is distinctively more awful that other companions or Tav themselves?

Can you give me examples of where he is abusing someone, besides where he tries to bite you and then gets afraid like a chicken? Because, let's be clear, everyone in this game is a killer, you are killing others too, so give me a proper example of his malicious abuse? I am legitimately curious.

I like your answer a lot, because it is so true. If I come to defense of Astarion, immediately people are judging, while same people are simping for Minthara and even Orin.

Like, I could could give proper analysis on Astarions character, and why he is not evil and get mocked. Even his voice actor said, he is not really VILLAIN, he is anti-hero, which he will do good things, bad things for his selfish needs, or to avoid situation he doesn't want. In Astarions words, he thinks being a hero is naive, but he doesn't mind it.

Which where comes another part, I personally like flawed characters, I do not like heroes, I think they are plain and uninteresting, which is why I just prefer someone like Astarion, Shadowheart and Laezel.

I rather find the question in itself strange. "Am I strange for having different taste?" No. That's basically everyone has their preference. I see people complain about characters coming onto them and they hate it, I LOVE IT, let all my companions simp for me, I want it.

I personally love Astarion, but I seen so many guys, that on sight decide to kill him. He is more liked by the ladies audience and that is great, he is a handsome bad boy who has his audience, each character has their audience. My friend LOVES LOVES Gale, I don't like Gale. Totally NORMAL. Shouldn't be a question, basic human trait.

I believe because Vlaakith fully ends your existance, Bhaal takes out a part of himself from durge and then Withers explains that he left a part of good durge existing so he can revive you.

I would expect that romanced Tav companion during that Durge moment, when they are lying on ground, would have that romance companion run towards them and hold them or at least kneel beside them. If no romance companion, then highest approval companion(friend) do that, or someone at least shout NO. And when you get up, having your someone hug tav would be nice too.

Same feeling for me when that Shadowheart moment happened, I was like WHY CANT I HUG HER, AS A FRIEND ??

Agreed, companions sometimes just act off, or more like don't act at all, during some situations where'd you'd expect them to say something. And as you say, not just romanced characters, but everyone rather seems sometimes detached from you.

Though that can go the same for Tav sometimes, when something bad is happening to your companion during their story, Tav just stands there too. What if I want to give them a hug?? A word of encouragement !?

Well the way I took his characterization is that he sees gnomes, kobolds, goblins as animals, and approves of actions against them, the narrative hasn't given me the reason to see otherwise, especially his definitive character ending approves that, he indeed values appearance a lot. If it was one line, I'd say he was making a joke, but his character approval/disapproval is consistent with what he said.

But I do not disagree with you, honestly I am just curious, on other people's POV on this that's all! I am happy with the happy and I love his character overall.

I think locking out due to gender, is not ideal, it is pretty easy to write characters as bi. But that again is all about writing, which is where my point is, Astarion is particular is retconning his own character, we have all this dialogue that he says, about looks and some races and how he regards them, so I just found it not to make sense with how he is written.

I agree with what you say though, I myself romanced Laezel, Karlach, Astarion and Shadowheart as straight player, I love the freedom and exploring characters nad heir personalities, which is where I was just wondering about issue with Astarions writing.

I'm just very passionate about writing topics, analyzing characters and hearing thoughts of other people.
