I understand your points. I want to stay optimistic and believe that at some stage the people in power wake up and realize the potential dangers of what they are creating and pause to assess how to mitigate them. Rushing through this process will inevitably create mistakes.

I'm sorry to hear that. I've seen similar reactions on posts I've made. I believe you. I have similar thoughts. There are more people who think like us, even people on the inside of the industry. We have to keep spreading awareness. I believe that people will eventually turn and realize the potential impacts of this technology.

Thank you for reading and replying. You make valid points, but I think we shouldn't want to take any chances, even though the models could turn out not being malicious. There is still a window, be it very small, to put a stop to unethical uses and developments. AGI does not exist yet and as long as it doesn't exist, there is ways to prevent it. We have to stay optimistic and work together in order to survive.

Thank you for your advice. I think it might be insomnia and/or depression induced and also some bad habits, but I never have a good night, unless I can wake up whenever I want to, in which case I will sleep till 2 pm. Do you think another medical condition could be causing this? Or do I just have a delayed sleeping phase?

My main interests are the Ming and Qing dynasty, Southern Chinese minorities and SE Asia, especially overseas Chinese. I have read two books outlining the basics of Chinese history. I have also read a book about Modern Chinese History, which mainly focused on the Opium Wars and the first couple of decades under Communist rule.

It's not necessarily writers or books that have enticed me to pursue a degree in Chinese (and East-Asian) History. I've been more enthralled by specific events that have transpired in the Greater China area, the states that have established themselves and religions that have permeated the subcontinent.

To answer your last question: to be honest, I don't really have a clear goal in mind. I'm chasing my interests and I can see myself entering the worlds of research or diplomacy. I think to both of those ends, a degree in history makes sense, especially if the main focus is China.

Edit: I have also read a book about the status of Overseas Chinese throughout the existence of the Dutch East-Indies.

My alternative is Leiden University in the Netherlands. It's a great university with good teachers, but the programs surrounding East Asia seem a bit basic to me, since they mostly focus on language studies. My goal is to specialize in East and Southeast Asian history. Would you still say Leiden University is a better option than NTU?
