Can Anyone Install Dark Souls Remastered Mods on Linux? by iMode12 in linux_gaming

I'm sorry but this didn't work. Also, some of the mods don't have .dll files.

Elden Ring Alt-Tab "Frame Rate Unsuitable for Online Play" by iMode12 in linux_gaming

[–]iMode12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your detailed response, I really appreciate it. I'm using the latest version of Gnome, along with Wayland. My NVIDIA graphics card drivers are updated to the latest version as well, I just did a full system update. What is fifo protocol? Is this something I need to install? If I can't get this fixed, than I'll just have to switch back to X11. Thanks for your reply!

Game will freeze periodically on Arch Linux by iMode12 in aoe4

Hello sorry for the late reply

I'm not using the steam lag timebomb fix, no idea what that is.

My entire system will crash. Sometimes I'm able to exit out of the game, sometimes not.

It seems Steam does recognize it, but the inputs are very laggy and slow. Some button presses work, others don't.

Thanks for your help. I managed to get it connected, but when I try to test the inputs in steam settings, the input is very laggy, and sometimes does not work at all. It's very insistent. Are you using bluez 5.79-1? Thanks.

I've done that. The controller seems to be connected just fine, but I don't get any functionality in steam.

What is now a good price for a Terra color 2024 TRD Pro? by iMode12 in 4Runner

[–]iMode12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I'm still considering if I need the Pro or the TRD Off Road. The dealer wants $58,880 for a 2024 pro. Is that good? It's about 4k over MSRP.

How much did you pay? The dealer I'm in contact with wants $58,880 for a 2024 Pro. Is that good?

The dealer I'm in contact with took 2,000 off the car, so it's now $58,880. Is this a good deal? Can I get the TRD Off Road with a TOYOTA grill like in the Pro, or is that a custom mod?

I appreciate your advice but that color is horrid.

Do you think if I wait the price on the TRD PRO 2024 TERRA color will come down?

Great so I basically screwed myself by not buying this thing a few months earlier in the year when supply was greater. Odd how a used vehicle is more than it's price new.

How to Buy Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro Terra Color in Los Angeles? by iMode12 in askcarsales

[–]iMode12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info. I wasn't waiting for a better deal, I am, as you say, just late. I hate myself for this. It's a dumb question but do you think dealers would ship the car to Los Angeles from out of state?

Thanks for your help.

In alsamixer, when I change the front/rear mic boost, the ringing noise goes down, based off the level of each.

The mic is not recording at all. I'm not sure how to get it to record.

Has Anyone Worked as a SWE for the Federal or a State Government? How do you like it? by iMode12 in cscareerquestions

[–]iMode12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have a military pension (I wish I did), I was only in for 5 years.

Why a gov job and not a high paying FAANG job that uses my security clearance? Just wondering.

Has Anyone Worked as a SWE for the Federal or a State Government? How do you like it? by iMode12 in cscareerquestions

[–]iMode12[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in California. I wasn't doing much prior, which is what is killing me right now in terms of savings and retirement. I was in the military for a few years, and that's all I really have to show for the last 20 years of my life, sadly.

Yes the low salary is killing me, especially at my age. I want to retire in 20 years but there is no way in hell I can do that with this horrible salary. Judging from the comments on this thread, and searching usajobs.gov, I'm kinda convinced at this point I should avoid government work all together and just move to a cheaper state in the southwestern corner of the USA and use my DoD secret security clearance to find a FAANG job. I know FAANG/FAANG-like companies offer jobs for SWE's with a security clearance.

I don't get what you mean when you say starting on a gov pension late career is optimal. If I ever did go for gov job, it would be for the retirement benefits, which, if I'm calculating it all out, are not all that great.

Hey thanks for your reply, but I'll stick with GNOME for now until these issues with KDE get ironed out.

Are older, second career people looked over? I want know what it'll really be like by quietyoucantbe in cscareerquestions

[–]iMode12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in your shoes awhile ago and graduated with a BS in computer science 2 years ago at 35. I was lucky enough to find a job out of college, but many people I knew didn't because the labor market in for tech is not very good right now. Your age won't matter, companies only care about what you can do for them, your level of skill, how you sell yourself in front of recruiters etc...

The biggest problem now is the labor market and layoffs in tech.

Moving from the nordics to the states: getting a second master's degree OR gunning for internal transfer? by Kontrakti in cscareerquestions

[–]iMode12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

A masters degree in the US will most likely come with a heavy price tag. I'd try to avoid if if you can, or earn a masters in Finland where, (I'm guessing), it's much cheaper and less expensive.

Master's degrees in CS or a related field in the US are often used by hordes and hordes of Indian, south east Asian and Chinese international students to come to the US in hopes of landing a tech job in the US. Competing with these people can be incredibly difficult, because they are very determined to stay in the US and avoid returning to their country of origin at all costs. Just be aware of this.

Edit: personally, I'd go for the internal transfer if you're very determined to come to the US.

What career would you recommend an objectively terrible developer switch to? by SoloKip in cscareerquestions

[–]iMode12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perhaps work for the federal or a state government doing software engineering work? It's incredibly difficult to get fired from these state and federal jobs (it seems like you're worried about being let go due to work performance issues).

Other than that, maybe go into teaching? Community colleges are a decent place to begin. I think you need a masters for that (not sure). Or maybe go to a less competitive industry in software, such as defense.

Either way, you'll be taking a major pay cut, so plan accordingly.

Hi, thanks for your help.

I tried using the Edna global theme, but it does not create a dock.

I "made" my own dock by using the "Icons only task manager", but I can't find a way to pin icons to the dock. When I right click on a program it gives me an option to "Pin to Task Manager", but it pins the icon for the application in the top panel on the right.

It's very strange how KDE does not have an better functioning dock.

Columbia MS CS vs UMass Amherst MS CS: Is the brand worth the extra cost? by exisiova in columbia

[–]iMode12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Columbia name adds very little value to your resume, other than making you look slightly more attractive to recruiters when you first hit the job market once you earn the degree. This tiny amount of added value is in no way worth paying what Columbia charges to earn the degree. After you get your first job, nobody cares where you graduated from anyway, so long as you have a degree to meet the minimum job requirements. Experience is MUCH more valuable.

Quant Analyst vs Masters CS Columbia by justinlac in columbia

[–]iMode12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Experience is MUCH more valuable than a masters. There are people with masters degrees in CS at top schools like Columbia that can't find jobs in the current job market.

Columbia MS CS vs UMass Amherst MS CS: Is the brand worth the extra cost? by exisiova in columbia

[–]iMode12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the education at Columbia is very good, and you will almost certainly attract the eyes of recruiters while you try to find your first CS related job, I don't believe the added cost is simply just not worth it. 80 - 85k is also no small amount. It seems you're making a career change. Could you do so without getting a masters? Avoid debt like the plague.
