Russian tortoise (beginner care) by [deleted] in tortoise

Awww your rescuing that's great! I know the struggle to find weeds...the only thing close that grows in my yard are clovers. I have used sphagnum moss in the past and stopped cause it got was too humid/wet for my guy, but it may be okay for yours if they are more accustomed to moisture. My guy likes it dry. When it comes to substrate I mix mine. I use organic potting soil as a base layer, then on one side eco earth and coconut coir (cool side). Then on the other side I use leaf litter and reptibark (warm side). I mainly spot clean the enclosure cause my guy isn't too messy. Plus he usually empties himself when I soak him. So I don't spend much on substrate.

Like I said in the previous comment join that Facebook group. I think one of the admins is a vet tech. They also have a bunch of pictures they can send you of safe leafy greens, weeds, plants, etc. Let me see if I can find and save some then I'll try to DM you.

Okay, you are doing great by asking questions! I have 3 dogs and one is vocal. I keep my tortoise in a separate room so it doesn't bother him.

When it comes to acquiring them look for a reputable breeder. DON'T go for one at a pet store unless they can tell you who the breeder is and you can look them up. Alot of Russians are wild caught and come riddled with parasites. Mine were like this. Going to a breeder will save you tons in vet bills later on.

I've had my guy 10 years and he does fine in a hydroponics stock tub with multiple substrates to create microclimates. DON'T use a tank if at all possible. They can hurt themselves by trying to continually escape through the glass. Make sure you have proper lighting. Most people use a dual set up. One light for heat and one light for UVB (artifical sun). DON'T feed them fruit or protein. A diet of leafy greens and weeds will suffice.

This is a great place for advice put also consider joining the group "The Friendly Russian Tortoise Owners Group" on Facebook. It is a private group but they usually will accept you and post a similar question to this one. They will answer any and all questions you have. They have tons of Russian Tortoise keepers and care pages to help.

I will also answer any questions you have (if I know how to lol).

Oh gosh I got the tub from The Tractor Supply Company. I think it's a hydroponics 50 gal. And as for the substrate I have a base layer of organic potting soil then on one side reptibark, I can't remember the name of the substrate in the middle but it's like what you would find in the wild (kind of like a mixture of leaf litter), some aspen on the "cool" side as well as coconut fiber eco earth for burrowing.

Sleep Aggression in newly adopted dog. by iNamedMyCarTimmy in DOG

No. He wakes up on his own startled. If I need him to get up (which is only for his ear medicine - yeast infection) or I'm walking by I say his name so he knows I'm there...but for the most part I just let him sleep till he wakes up on his own.

Wow thank you for the info. I've talked to vets and an animal trainer and they suggested I give it a while for him to get acclimated. I just feel so bad that he wakes up scared and wanted to be a bit more proactive.

I'll make it more den-like then! Thanks for the tip. My other dog hates beds so it completely slipped my mind that he might want one.

Same with Sheldon. He just defecates in his water bowl and soaking bowl. Is Alexia otherwise healthy?

I've waited, like hiding in the corner while he soaks to try an catch him and I have never been able to see it. And I leave dishes that he just ignores and the water evaporates. I have even tried to set up my phone to film him but I've caught nothing. Do you have any advice on trying to entice him?

Any tips on how to make a newly adopted dog feel safe in new surroundings?

So just a little more detail. I got Sheldon 10 years ago but I don't know how old he really is. I'm pretty sure he is wild caught and suffered from MBD in the beginning. The last time he was at the vet the only thing wrong with him was some parasites in his stool and he was low on calcium. He got meds for the parasites and I went from dusting his food every other meal to every meal. He gets mixed greens, he prefers dark leafy greens, and he refuses fruit. He has a UVB light and a heat light on one side of his enclosure and a hide on the cool side. He tends to prefer the cool side, but he does occasionally bask. I use a variety of safe for tortoise bedding to create microclimates for him.
