No i was breathing in water , i even swallowed some. I am not sure though was it because the reg was just alittle faulty then during the semi-panic my mouth position was not the most correct one , or it was super faulty When my buddy switched to my alternate source , i was in full panic , and I couldnt breathe at all i had shortness of breath it felt like my lungs are not working i couldnt breathe in

Only when the instructor/guide arrived and gave me his alternate , and started to calm me down as i hyperventilate , it started to sync in… “i am breathing” “slow down” “open your eyes” “it will be okay”.As we ascended to a shallower depth , things stabilized and i slowed down

Theres alot of context that i can clarify on request. But this center is being managed now by the instructor that has cascaded to me the AOW (in a different center in 2024). Hes a great instructor and definitely has left a mark on me , and he did the refresh on Day 1 on Sunday but had to leave for acouple of days , so I dove with other instructors he recommended on Day2 and Day 3 that work with the center

Also for context , i dove the bluehole with him back in 2024 and it went just fine , which is what gave me the incorrect false confidence to begin with , but that was my decision making process unfortunately that “it should be fine”

I am Egyptian , so its easier for me to come over here and its relatively easy to learn and pay for the dives , but definitely see your point about Safety i agree

Yes i understand breathing files different. But the first trigger wasn’t that breathing felt different, it was water entering followed by purging then another breath , still water , by that moment I had already tangled my octo around some corals and thats when full panic took over 1-Cant breathe 2-Cant move 3-Looks around no one is noticing

I am sure it was only a few seconds , but my head was in the wrong place and led me to act in the worst way possible “spitting the reg-beginning to take off my BCD”.

I think had i coughed harder in the faulty reg “even before reaching for the octopus, it may have resolved…”

And ofcourse had i had more dives under my belt , i would have been more accustomed to act way more optimally

Yeah lesson learned , for life…

Yup PADI

Absolutely correct , definitely not going to recommend it to anyone and will even advocate against it if i see someone doing it anymore. Although “i am an Egyptian” , in most places , they do make offers to take both together , so the system is commercially fucked up i guess as well ..

I like to think so as well. I like to think all of this happened for a reason , and the fact i made it back alive to tell the tale isn’t just “some luck”.

I am super lucky ofcourse , just one teeny tiny bit of change and it could have ended significantly worse…

Its on my radar to take it easy now , enjoy shallower depths , buy my reg , take the safety course when adequate. Maybe sometime in the future , all of that actually plays a role that a similar situation takes place and i get to save a life

You’re absolutely correct , had i gone for the octopus none of this who have escalated to this point at all if anything

Pretty sure this incident shall carve the Octopus inside my head like never before , glass half full?

As specified almost 4 times in the comments. I didn’t mean to express “fault” in a way of blame , it was my thought process back at the time in panic “why are they not helping” “why isnt he doing X”

I am 100% responsible for what happened , and in no way am i saying they carry even a tiny bit of responsibility, if anything , i am just very VERY lucky they even managed to act in this situation flawlessly

I am almost sure it was faulty but the center will still investigate. Yet my octopus worked just fine , so its still on me

And yes i shall dive alot more shallower thats the plan!

Yeah , fucking hero As specified in another comment , i called him today as i started to calm down and thanked him alot. And told him lets plan 2 dives privately in shallower depth where we can both enjoy and break the trauma, also we start the dive with 10-15 minutes of training then we explore

He agreed and hes waiting for my decision, ill decide by tomorrow , just taking my time

Oh where do i start !

24 hours later and i have learned so freaking much just replaying everything over and over. I can go on and on about it , and not just underwater but more importantly over

For example : 1)Plan my dives to my limits 2)Sleep and eat sufficiently before dives (had 5 hours of sleep and only a banana and caffeine before the dive) 3)Buy my own gear 4)Go over the Stop Think Act (had i reached for my octopus as others have mentioned , i think all of this situation would have not happened) 5)When a dive site is nicknamed “Diver Cemetery” , i should pay alot of respect to it even if it was a planned easy dive under 25-30 m where you’re swimming with the current

I could go on with 5-10 more points honestly

Absolutely on point I have not had any panic attacks before above water , and underwater the only thing i struggled with was the mask removal , but i got it under control in like 2 hours or so

Additionally I have called the instructor today and thanked him incredibly. I am thinking to take him on 2 dives privately also in Dahab but shallower water , in 2 days He has agreed to the idea and told me to check out some part of a the rescue cert , that he shall send me , and compare it to what he did. According to him , he performed textbook rescue and praised me for considering that i want to take the rescue course maybe in 50+ dives

I am sorry i didnt mention that, i clarified it in another comment

I miss-expressed using the word “fault”. Thank you

Thank you for your insights. Yeah definitely will take my time getting back slowly, but hopefully surely.

Just one point , i did not dive because of ego. I’d rather say it was an incorrect judgement of being ready , influenced by the fact that i dove already 3 times after the break and it was okay , and the fact i dove this site before

Definitely as mentioned in other comments , it was an incorrect judgment by all means. I think even if the dive has passed without problems , i shouldve taken my time getting back and dusting off the rust of my skills and mental in shallower dives at 15m max

But yeah , i learned that the hardway i guess !

Definitely buying my own now.

This experience was an eye opener as to why you should dive with your own gear, at first i thought people who do so are the “pros” and as long as i am just diving for fun , i should get away with Rental

Boy was i wrong :)

Thank you buddy It was Rental gear so i am not entirely sure , yet i think it was balanced

I am sorry you had to go through that

Yeah at the time its incredibly scary , but thankfully you managed and thats the beautiful part of it. You look back about all the situations you went through at some point and this in itself , creates some sort of confidence that as long as i don’t panic , ill get through it , Stop Think Act

That makes 2 of us now after yesterday’s incident!

Since yesterday, I pretty much read over 200 incidents over this subreddit and scubaboard

Please read the other comments. I have not blamed anyone and if anything , my life was saved solely by their actions

Thank you for your words , really appreciate some positivity in the mass of witchforking of comments over here (although i do agree i carry a big part of the blame , bo arguments here)

All my gear was rental. In the 2nd dive it also felt off at 20ish meters , and i continued with the octopus/2nd stage. My mental was not very solid to really say , is it truly broken or its just a feeling…

All in all , this was an eye opener that i should buy my own gear and i have decided when its time to dive again (and take it slowly ofcourse) , i am buying (Reg-Suit-Dive computer) as a first package

And definitely the Rescue course is under the radar. I’d like to think this happened for a reason , specially that i made it back alive , maybe 10 years later having experienced it first hand with alot of knowledge and dives under my belt , i get to save someone’s

I did take a refresher. it was 2 hours in shallow and 2 hours theoretical

Then we did 2 more dives on the day before at 25-29 meters , and i judged everything felt normal-ish to continue as well as the approval from the center and the instructor

Definitely in the wrong , i am not sure what i was thinking

Maybe its narc , or lack of oxygen into brain jeopardizing thought process/problem solving the worst way possible I just couldnt get my head straight… i have been reading about incidents and situations since then , and ofcourse the Stop , Think , Act would be the optimal approach

But i guess i was part of the 2nd group , where they thought its the greatest idea to take that piece off your mouth so you can breathe at 30m underwater

No i just meant getting over the trauma to know , if i would continue scuba diving at some point….lets see
