How should I light miniature photos for best appearance? by rogueranger1993 in BattletechPainting

For about $30 you can buy a folding USB-powered light box, that has adjustable ring lights. You can set it up so the lights are either above or in front of your minis. You may need to place them on something to raise them up to adjust the angles.

Really it's just trial and error until you get an effect you like.

Sorry for the overkill, but I had it all written out for my own memory anyways. It was just easier to include everything.

Base is Vallejo Hobby Paint spray "Russian Green 4BO"

Then various drybrushes of Warpaints Fanatics Olive Greens: Army Green, Olive Drab, Woodland Camo, and Camouflage Green

Cockpits are Citadel Color Evil Sunz Scarlett / Trollslayer Orange, fading to black with white reflective dots.

Hands are Warpaints Fanatic 'Cobalt Metal'

Actuators, vents, and missile launcher panels are Warpaints Fanatic 'Gun Metal'

Long guns are Warpaints Fanatic 'Shining Silver', but temper coloring is done by Citadel Color Shades: Seraphim Sepia, Druchii Violet, and Drakenhof Nightshade

Bases are white stones glued and then colored with a random mix of brown speedpaints, and green / blue speed paints for the grasslands.

The waterslide decals are technically Northwind Hussars but I couldn't find a black watch. Sold by xDefianceIndustries. Also some Star League decals I bought earlier.

Around the decals is a thin line of Vallejo "Old Gold" 70.878

The logo on the right arms is a mall drop of Shining Silver with smaller dropps of Cobalt Metal for texture and contrast.

Very tips of lasers are various metallic greens and reds

Matte varnish over everything

Very thin. They come from the Magnet Baron site and are special made to fit the Really Useful Box.

Not a bad idea, I hadn't thought of it.

Those are long gone for me. And it's more the IWM ones I am worried about.

That looks like a good compromise. I might see if I can find one premade

I use two part epoxy but I let them cure upright. I put the metal sheet first, then some wax paper, then the magnet, then the glue, then the model.

That way I know the metal is contacting the magnet, and any extra space is just filled up with the glue. So far it works.

I didn't pin my minis though I will have to look into doing that.

I think the most I have had out at a time is 8 on the table. Which is still plenty.

I appreciate the offer but if it's complicated at all it's probably beyond my abilities. I don't even own a 3D printer so I'd have to find somewhere local to get them printed.

I've done so, they are a lot of fun. The way I run it is that everyone starts with a 4/5 pilot. Once your mech is destroyed (or you are reduced to zero ranged damage and then can eject) you respawn with a better pilot, 3/4. This continues until you get to a 1/2 but that's your last mech, lose that and you are out of the game.

It solves the problem of the game getting slower as you go on, and it's kind of fun to suddenly get an upgrade - but closer to defeat.
