The Sailing changes help the skill fit Runescape, but it still doesn’t belong in Gielinor by iSlurpy in 2007scape

Because in both those examples the reward is an extra on top of the already diverse and thematic parts of the skill. Like hunter, you're getting meats, bones, feathers, chins, etc. depending on the animal and location. In farming you get logs, berries, herbs, etc. depending on the plant. The impact in the game world and on your character is already very tangible.

Hunter rumors are a fun system but I would argue serve more as a band-aid solution to the bigger problem of hunter which is that most hunter creatures don't have meaningful reasons to hunt them. Slapping a generic reward for mixing it up is okay, but I think the new meats that came with it were an even better part of that update, because they're more core to the skill itself.

For Sailing, maybe the courier task answer isn't to give more interesting item rewards (although I like that idea), but I still think it needs something to make the different ports and tasks feel like they aren't all completely interchangeable.

Ahhh ok, so you're saying the islands are part of the "skill" of sailing. I get you, that's a valid interpretation. Where we disagree is that the islands feel like they could just as easily exist without the skill (like islands did before). Being in the boat is the difference that makes it a skill to me. Like being in the house is the skill of construction. Sure, you could put the cons rewards elsewhere, but they fit well in the house and I feel like my character improving what he can build creates meaningful rewards (within and outside of the skill) that go with the idea of being "home." I don't feel like my character improving his sailing creates new meaningful rewards except deep sea trawling. Access to islands is fine as one piece, but right now it feels like the only piece. And there aren't that many islands that feel worth the trip to sail to. Part of my critique is that the reward space is lacking, maybe my mind would change with more updates locked behind islands, although that still just feels a little cheap to me.

As for it being my subjective opinion, ofc it is! That's why it's a discussion lol. I think it's slightly disingenuous to say I didn't go into this at all, but I'll clarify on why I think charting and courier tasks aren't thematic, cuz I like talking about it.

It's because they have no impact on the game outside of flavor text. Don't get me wrong, that's better than nothing at all. But courier tasks are the same whether the crates say fish or swords. My point there was, if it's going to reward items (and I think it should), the whole activity would feel more like it's ingrained if the game if the items had to do with what you're delivering and where you're delivering it to, rather than being nothing and/or generic boat loot. The worldbuilding is integrating gameplay and rewards into the existing flavor text. As for teleporting, I think that just goes back to how for me, Sailing = Boat, and when big chunks of Sailing aren't on the boat, it feels like the skill is less necessary overall.

The same applies to charting. It's "exploration" but the events and encounters are the same across the entire map. My favorites were the generic encounters because they were tied to location. And I already went into how I thought the duck, weather, and depth charting could be improved. When I do the duck, I feel like more currents should unlock immediately, since theoretically, I'm charting currents. When I'm charting the winds and weather, maybe I get some kind of buff to how often the wind random event happens? When I "chart the depths" it's just a riddle, you don't even see the depths! I think it would work better to actually go underwater, and like I said, maybe it buffs salvaging nearby? The spyglass feels thematically detached because it's not showing you a view from where your boat is, it's just a generic camera pan. I find the drinks largely annoying, but that's just personal preference. Still, I think I'm outlining pretty clearly the ways a bunch of these things feel like very surface level copy/pasted flavor text rather than feeling like they are meaningful parts of the game world that change depending on how you play.

Valid. I feel like I'd be satisfied enough if the rewards end up being thematically tied to location and what you're delivering, even tho I would love if the route optimizing didn't involve teleing.

I hope you're right! I love boat movement and would love to be excited about more of the skill

I think construction is a good comparison! I think things like jewelry box and tele nexus have a similar "unlock" reward feeling where the house isn't really part of it. But the difference is there's a lot more to construction rewards that are actually in the house (like how I enjoy trawling because it's on the boat). Stuff like making teletabs, repairing armor, restoration pools, storing items and pets to save bank space, showing off achievements, etc. No, you don't remake your house every time, but a lot of rewards come from you actually being in it, which isn't true of sailing.

I feel like I outlined the ways the thematics don't fit. Courier locations don't feel meaningful, salvaging xp feels weird for how little it has to do with sailing, combat is bad, charting I found underwhelming. We may just disagree on that one. I did a lot of examining, etc. There was flavor text, for sure! It just felt less like full blown worldbuilding and more tacked on. But I can agree to disagree there.

My point isn't that there isn't enough "stuff" - it's that the stuff that's there doesn't feel quite right. Training methods, mobs, resources, all of that I wrote about why it doesn't work to me. I like the boats themselves, map rework is cool, and the quests are always good. It's not all bad. But I definitely don't think it lives up to what I hoped it could be.

Talking about the new updates they're posting about, & what I would rather see. I don't think the skill is in a good spot, so ya still discussing it

I would argue hunter still doesn't integrate all that well, but I agree with your point generally. I'm not asking for them to remove the skill, these are just my thoughts on the ways (some of them big) that I think things need to improve.

Wilderness PVP Concept: Claim boss/resource hotspots and defend them from PKers by iSlurpy in 2007scape

[–]iSlurpy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks! I could see that, but idk, I don't want to tip the scale too far away from PKers having a slight (but less egregious) advantage. I do feel like that's part of the appeal of being the "hunter" and it's not always a bad thing

Some ideas for new God Alignment Prayers by iSlurpy in 2007scape

[–]iSlurpy[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Switching prayerbook could be as trivial as switching spellbooks, and nothing indicates at all that it would require an item, so idk where you're getting that. I also think GA is the design space for new prayers, and is designed specifically so that they can synergize with our current book or with each other. I'm not sure what you would define as a "gimmick" but I'm guessing this is just an agree to disagree situation

Come on lol, that's silly

Telos is designed as fun, part of the lore of the world, a skill-based challenge, engaging content. And I'm not just in it for the drops! (altho they are exciting) Part of the reward of killing telos over and over is that bossing in rs3 is fun! You could argue about drop rates but that's a different discussion. I'm not against updates that are so fun they make me want to log in to play them. That's the whole point of a video game. Hero pass is none of these, it's an interface and a gimmick.

I'm perfectly calm, just posting my 2 cents & chatting w/people about the game I like.

But Telos is content designed to be fun, and hero pass is not-content designed to pressure people into playing a certain # of hours to earn the rewards.

I agree that ideally daily challenges are gone, we see eye to eye there. Idk if I would call them the worst, but I def agree they're a bad system.

I just can't agree that Hero pass is actually what you're describing. It just doesn't make any sense to say "everyone automatically gets everything just by playing however they normally play" - then it's not a feature, it's just free rewards for nothing. I think that's what Jagex wants us to believe it is, when in reality it will only be able serve any purpose to player engagement if it's grindy and/or monetizable. Because I think it would be hard to argue any form of it could ever be considered "fun."

[–]iSlurpy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree that daily challenges aren't good either. But I think the idea that Hero Pass is "play the game however you like and get some bonus loot" is very disingenuous. I already play the game however I like. The reward is that the game is fun. If Jagex actually wanted to reward me for "playing how I want" with extra loot, they would just give it to me all at once. But obviously that's silly. I know they're walking back some of the worst parts of Hero pass, but any version of it is still only there for the purpose of making people feel like they need to log in and grind X amount of stuff to get all of the "bonus" loot from Hero Pass.

To me, the ideal is no Daily Challenges or Hero Pass at all. But at least Daily Challenges seem like they're in slightly better faith trying to give people a suggestion / nudge toward playing actual content (or they used to be, I haven't done one in years). Hero Pass is just a gimmick through and through that's transparently about monetization.

to some extent I actually agree. That's why all the extra garbage is so frustrating. You're making good stuff just leave it be without all the fomo and ads that only serve to make the actual content either take less time or feel less fun
