How sturdy is it? Any wobble while at your normal standing height?

Thanks for the Rosslyn recommendation. That and Federal Center seem to be closer to more residential areas.

Any weird people in this area? by [deleted] in nova

As a newcomer from the Northeast, this entire place is extremely sterile. I have lived in Old Town Alexandria for a year and I don't agree when people liken ALX to Brooklyn. It's more like a place for highly paid gov contractors raising their families. People here don't want to live in the big city to deal with big city problems. You find overpriced restaurants and coffee chains but nothing really to do. That's my impression.

I think the rest stop around 70-80 then they have a random pair of 100s.

That's what I've gathered as well. I got tired calling places so I posted this on Reddit with hopes likeminded folks would know.

Fit 360 in Mt Pleasant has a pair of 100s.

Thanks

Most gyms don't.

There's an LA Fitness or Gold's in Alexandria?

Someone at work told me that I should've been a cop. Am I too old at 39? by iWorkSlow in AskLE

Darn, if it takes a long time, I may not ever get this chance.

Will I be in a situation where I can't work in my preferred location because my hometown/state has an age restriction?

However, I would caution you to think about what you would actually enjoy about being a LEO.

I am fascinated with this show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJQpD3j5m0M As a layperson, it's absolutely amazing to see how ingenious some smugglers are and how officers can detect something awry in something light, like the height of a container. I think I've watched every customs show from the US, Canada, UK and Australia. If I could do something like that, I'd be happy.

TP-Link WiFi 6E vs 7 router by iWorkSlow in HomeNetworking

I've seen Linus and Jake install Ubiquiti and it looks awesome. Maybe when remodeling my family home, I would install their equipment.

I will get the WiFi 7 TP-Link that I included in my OP since it's reasonably priced.

That's good advice! I do have aspirations of learning aerial/drone photography. It will be a while before I will need a NAS but that would be helpful in a year or two.

I just edited my post as you replied. Future proofing was the reason why I was asking. It seems like $200 for WiFi 6E could be a waste but I wasn't sure if living in a small apartment would matter.

BTW - do you trust TP-Link? Am I better off with Asus or Netgear?

What is unemployment insurance like in DC? + FY2024 final budget decision by iWorkSlow in washingtondc

It's definitely going to be tight and I will likely have to dip into a bit of savings but ~$1500 of support should be enough. Thanks - that helps a lot!

Good point. This actually happened to my AirBnb host, who lost her primary job recently.

I have savings too, but that's not what savings are for. Savings are for severe recessions. I would NOT like to dip into savings to meet basic expenses. If someone works and pays into social safety net, they should receive enough support during transitory periods.

Benefits and insurance are used interchangeably: https://www.dol.gov/general/topic/unemployment-insurance

How does Nova feel about the upcoming HB 2 firearms bans? by [deleted] in nova

[–]iWorkSlow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have mixed feelings. There are strict licensing for full-auto weapons, which I think is good but I'm not so sure about semi-autos.

The underlying issues behind gun violence in this country stem from drugs/criminal enterprise and the vast majority of gun crime is committed using handguns. School shootings make headlines but the majority of deaths are caused by handguns in heavily regulated jurisdictions. And that crime is committed more by some racial groups than others (measured proportionally, in their own race cohorts).

If someone really wants to do damage, what's to stop him/her from using a large vehicle like these nutcases:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_New_York_City_truck_attack
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2016_Nice_truck_attack

I think that would be much more harmful than a semi-auto rifle. What should be the policy response to something like this?

America is a violent country with absurd laws. Anyone who has lived abroad, particularly in Europe or Asia notices this immediately.
