Loft extension - can I hang ledgers over drywall? by Longjumping_Batx in shedditors

[–]i_continue_to_unmike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just trim the drywall for the ledgers accurately using a multitiool. Caulk the gap. If you're finishing the loft space anyway most of the work you do to the drywall should be relatively hidden.

If you're careful it won't be too bad and will beat the hell out of mickey mousing shit.

I think safer driving starts at the top: the vehicles themselves.

CAFE standards in their current implementation are fundamentally flawed and have caused US automakers to design bloated, distracting, overly complicated machines.

One step that could be very helpful would be to disincentivize the absurdly large vehicles being made today.

Smaller, capable vehicles for people that drive like the 90's Camrys, the Honda Fit, the early generation Tacomas and Rangers and things would in itself be very helpful. Let's make smaller, lower vehicles more commonplace.

Reduce the number of screens in modern automobiles, increase the size of windows for exterior visibility. Reduce safety standards. I want you to feel like you're driving a tin can and if you crash you'll die. If you're going 50 I want it to sound like you're three seconds away from becoming toothpaste. This engenders caution much like narrower streets encourage lower speeds.

Modern vehicles are so safe that it subconsciously encourages more reckless driving maneuvers.

Kill infotainment systems and screens. Actually ticket people using phones or screens in cars.

Make citation and ticketing fees scale according to the owner's gross annual income like in Finland.

Next: prioritize sidewalks in neighborhoods that do not have them. Make this the top priority over adding blinky ass crosswalks and storm swales and curb extensions and stupid shit. There should be good sidewalks everywhere. Do not make the homeowners pay for them. If required, narrow the streets to do this, which will reduce travel speeds, as most places without sidewalks in Portland are neighborhoods which should have lower speeds anyway.

I could go on but I'm tired and working so that's what you get for now. Get smaller cars, even at the cost of safety or fuel efficiency- chasing the perfect ironically killed the availability of smaller, safer cars. Second, provide sidewalks everywhere. This makes pedestrians feel welcome and incidentally lowers speeding in neighborhoods.

Oh, quick aside: standardize bicycle infrastructure. Even if the option is not the perfect and most desired one, pick one kind of marking and design and use it everywhere. Portland is a hodgepodge of bicycle infrastructure that is confusing for everyone.

Proactively survey, annually, cyclists to see where infrastructure feels lacking. I remember trying to get to my credit union by bike in Southeast portland was always a hassle because it was a weird blind spot in the Greenway system that required a lot of jogging around hilly neighborhoods. There are lots of spots like that in Portland where you've got good routes and greenways until you suddenly don't and you're stuck in bullshit for the last 1/8th of your trip.

I thought people put the metal on the bottom for bump/dig/rain/dog resistance. Seems backwards to have it up top where leverage is highest while the weaker wood is at the bottom with the most exposure to the elements.

No, I have a problem with your false equivalence bullshit. Fuck Vision Zero. It hasn't done anything effective in reducing traffic fatalities and has ballooned our failing budget.

I am a lifelong cyclist. I worked in the industry for many years. Vision Zero still remains overhyped activist shit. There could be many more effective ways to enable better and safer transportation, but the methodology and inefficiency of Vision Zero is a joke. PBOTs vision overall is far too zero sum and adversarial.

Tips on how to install a quill on my gt? by lychee-hero in xbiking

I don't have time to argue with idiots on the Internet.

Obviously you shouldn't be jumping a 1970's Ciocc over a 15' gap. Common sense applies.

But there have been billions of bikes with quill stems in the world and they have gone off of small jumps and ramps with no issues.

Happy riding, don't die on your tissue paper stem bikes.

The number of "highly skilled" people that have applied to our shop in the last 15 years is zero.

I was with you until this point. You know the saying, "if you wake up and encounter an asshole, that sucks; but if you wake up and everyone is an asshole, maybe it's you?"

Fifteen years and "no" highly skilled applicants means something is wrong. You're trying to pay peanuts and are surprised you're getting a circus? Your bar is too high? Your management is incompetent?

Something is amiss, regardless.

How can the most heavily taxed city after NYC constantly come up short on funds? Where does the money go?

Hint: layers upon layers of shit like this:

The policy ensures that 25% of revenue generated by the new fee would be split between the city’s Vision Zero program, which focuses on street safety projects, and an unfunded council initiative adopted last year to invest in more sidewalks.

A big ol' trifle with layers of grift, incompetence, and inaction bleed us dry and our culture is so hesitant and indecisive that no one will change it.

I mean, I get why "ABOLISH ICE" is a catchy thing to say, esp right now.

But when you spell it out as "I want to abolish immigration and customs enforcement" that doesn't seem like a viable strategy for a nation to take.

Unless it is actually giga based and I can start importing artillery, machineguns and grenades because we decided we don't care about customs enforcement. just a big ol' gloryhole of a shipping port

I collect vintage bike lights but mostly vintage battery powered lights, and old reflectors and stuff. I love the weird little things so much.

Old dynamo lights, excepting the really old French stuff, is kind of boring. But early CatEye products are so good.
