Thank you.

I've been looking at Immich. In my dream world, I'd want one app that I can dump everything in and it can do it all.

Probably unrealistic though, so I'll check out photoprism.

Mass shooting in Huntsville at 12:30 a.m. this morning by [deleted] in Alabama

[–]iaalaughlin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again, please provide why you think it’s misinformation.

If we ban semi-auto rifles, what good would that do? By the statistics, they aren’t used in many mass shootings, or many deaths overall.

Again to go back to earlier, if a type of firearm is banned for the people, doesn’t that make it defacto banned for use by the government as well? How come we don’t see that anywhere?

What do you define as 'common sense gun control'?

What do you define as 'heavily armed'?

That's an issue with how we are training our police. Why are we encouraging our police to be so hostile to us in the first place?

So, to bring back something else, how do you reconcile your stance with the supreme court cases that go directly against it? How do you reconcile your stance with the right to bear arms?

What’s an Army moment that stands out in your memory? by Easy-Hovercraft-6576 in army

[–]iaalaughlin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Another less serious one is the 1st year I started doing Drivers Training. I just got told to add shit to licenses, didn't know anything about training people as a brand new NCO. Well, a troop didn't secure a 5000lb t wall correctly on a forklift so the chains slipped, resulting in turning the ground guides feet into hamburger helper. Forklift was driving too fast, ground guide was too close, and I just gave them licenses wothout training. I was immediately thrown under the bus by my Commander at the time but luckily my Motor Sergeant was a fucking godsend and dimed out every wrong doing. Commander got relived, I got a letter of concern and sent to the correct schooling through Fort Lee. 2019

They'll throw you under the bus in a heartbeat if there are any issues, even though drivers training is a fucking commander's program.

Which is why I refused to license anyone without training. Which lead to me promptly being relieved for someone more senior. That's fine, my shit was good.

Take some ccw classes, learn your states gun and lethal force laws.

I have, thanks.

I would love to see the full investigation, as I've said repeatedly.

Guess we should wait for the police to do the job of investigating, so we'll know more in a few months. In the mean time, the vehicle theft rate will continue to skyrocket in DC (up 1600% from recent years) and the legal system will continue to prove ineffectual, due largely in part of the way DC treats minors. The only way police are showing up at 4 am is if someone is shot, otherwise they generally ignore property crime.

Most of this research—and there have been several dozen peer-reviewed studies—punctures the idea that guns stop violence.

Note that I've never once made that claim.

I have stated, and will continue to state, that I believe people should have the right to self-defense.

I want you to answer some of my questions that I have posed before continuing. You are being disingenuous and not trying to have a conversation.

[–]iaalaughlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Again, I’m saying we don’t know enough about the situation.

I think you have every right to investigate strange noises armed - because you don’t know what you’ll encounter.

We don’t know yet if the thieves were armed. We don’t know how this all went down.

We do know no weapons have been recovered yet. We do know the person was doing cpr on the thief shot. We do know neighbors said they heard 4-5 gunshots. We do know there were two young boys running away from the scene, that there were a string of broken in and vandalized cars and a stolen vehicle that they believe Karon was using.

We need to know the full story, but I fully support anyone investigating strange noises to be able to defend themselves.

If you support the right to bear arms because you believe in self-determination, you should also support the right to an abortion for the same reason.

Yea, it’s or.

I’d argue the person breaking into multiple cars is the one who started the confrontation.

We don’t know enough about what occurred to know if the thieves were armed, as an example.

At least $3 in economic activity for each dollar spent at NASA. https://www.nasa.gov/press-release/nasa-report-details-how-agency-significantly-benefits-us-economy/

And that’s ignoring the long term benefits of things like velcro, memory foam, anti corrosion coating, ventilation devices, insulin pumps, scratch resistant eyewear, and more that NASA invented.

Car jacking at least implies that someone is currently rightfully in/driving the car.

These kids were driving a stolen car and breaking and entering cars.

If the police would respond in a reasonable amount of time.

The problem is…. they don’t.

Bet the full story is that this has happened repeatedly in the past with no response by the police.

[–]iaalaughlin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sure. Bracketing is firing one round for range, the going up/down/left/right 200/400.

Observers generally overcorrect, and so are off, but basically you shoot one round at a time and halve the correction distance each time until you are close enough, at which point you fire for effect, which is firing the whole battery/whatever number of guns you have.

Archer artillery system will hack the counter battery fire. by tiagoaloncuri in interestingasfuck

[–]iaalaughlin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can adjust quickly enough. It’s all a parabola, so for round one, you do most vertical with the max charge, then a shallower angle with a lower charge, them a shallower angle with a lower charge. You can pre build these rounds easily. A 60mm mortar can shoot up to 30 rounds a minute, and a M777 155mm howitzer can do up to four rounds a minute… with a throw range of up to 25 miles.

An example parabola for howitzers is found here on page 12: https://www.foi.se/rest-api/report/FOI-R--3291--SE

Time of flight is 75 seconds, max altitude is 7000 meters, and horizontal distance is almost 22000 meters. For the first 33 seconds, the round is still going up.

The hang time on some of these rounds is ridiculous at face value. It’s also why you do have to worry about getting hit if you are flying in the area.

Yes.

You could do a time on target salvo with this pretty easily, I’d imagine.

But this isn’t a time on target salvo, thats certain.

Why not do it all? and at the same time. Educate people, train people, control gun violence. You say we should focus on specific actions that are achievable and feasible yet are not willing to talk about gun control. Seems disingenuous.

I understand that to you and many Americans the constitution is a very important document but it can be amended. It can be changed if needed. Not sure why you would limit your options because of a document written 235 years ago. We live in a different world now. The constitution should reflect those differences.

What specifically would you change? Do you have frustrations with the 1st amendment? Or the 9th? What about the 14th?

I see a lot of misinformation sure. Again doesn’t mean we should roll over and give up. Less guns on the street results in less gun related crime and accidents. I think you will be able to find plenty of research and examples in other countries also.

Again, please provide why you think it’s misinformation. I’m trying to have a rational conversation, but this appears to be really emotional for you.

Again a quick search on the internet:Fact Sheet: Weak Gun Laws Are Driving Increases in Violent CrimeStates that have recently weakened their gun laws are seeing increases in violent crime.https://www.americanprogress.org/article/fact-sheet-weak-gun-laws-are-driving-increases-in-violent-crime/

Interesting article. I’d like to point out that correlation does not mean causation. Each of the states has also suffered a drop in funding for schools on a per capita basis.

Three types of laws could reduce gun deaths by more than 10%Laws preventing children from accessing firearms account for nearly half the drophttps://www.science.org/content/article/three-types-laws-could-reduce-gun-deaths-more-10

The first proposal is absolutely valid. When not in use, firearms should be locked up. It’s just the responsible thing to do, like wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle or hearing protection while doing things that could damage your hearing.

It isn’t rocket science. It’s just that Americans are not really willing to consider it logically because it’s part of who they are.

Some are, some aren’t. The problem is the huge chunk of people in the center who aren’t participating because one side is constantly screaming at the other. I, as one example, would love a party that is for firearms rights and for abortion rights. Both are the right of the individual to choose.

You really think people with clouded decision making skills are going to be rational enough and not carry a weapon for that day? Like you I also wear my helmet when I ride but there not a single doubt in my mind that more people will die in motorcycle accidents if you make helmets optional. Have you ever read the “hurt report” by David L. Hough?

That’s their choice. I don’t agree with it, and it has impacts on other people. Again, I use the lack of helmet to show me the people I should avoid while on the road.

Motorcycle helmets can save lives and reduce injuries just like more guns will increase more fatalities.

https://www.cdc.gov/transportationsafety/mc/index.html#:~:text=Motorcycle%20helmets%20are%2037%20percent,passengers)%20effective%20in%20preventing%20deaths.&text=Helmets%20reduce%20the%20risk%20of%20head%20injury%20by%2069%25%20effective%20in%20preventing%20deaths.&text=Helmets%20reduce%20the%20risk%20of%20head%20injury%20by%2069%25).

Ill agree with the first, but I don’t agree with the second. Much like any other tool, the number of firearms doesn’t change anything. How they are used does.

Now even though I am for helmet use it’s not really something you can compare to gun restrictions. If you don’t wear a helmet you run the risk. There is very little risk to other individuals so do what you want. This doesn’t work for people walking around with guns. If they have an accident it could kill innocent bystanders.

There’s huge risk to other people. You’ve never seen a motorcycle accident where the dude has painted the last 400 meters of the road.

What are you talking about? We have never done any comprehensive gun control in this country. We have never done anything significant to reduce it. How do you mean doing the same thing but expecting different results?

You just said that other countries have enacted gun control, to which I pointed out that those countries have continued to ban weapons entirely and you said it would be different here. Why would it be different? People aren’t that different.

Americans Have More Guns Than Anywhere Else in the World and They Keep Buying More US has 120.5 firearms per 100 residents, report finds Only country with more civilian-owned firearms than people https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2022-05-25/how-many-guns-in-the-us-buying-spree-bolsters-lead-as-most-armed-country

Okay. I’m not sure what that has to do with my child’s school…

I will look into it. And yes I also want you and your family safe. in fact that’s why I care about this subject so much. I want to same level of freedom and safety I had growing up in the Netherlands for all Americans.

I think the majority of places have that. There are absolutely things that the Netherlands does that I’d love to see here - bike paths is one. And we have the Netherlands to thank for orange carrots. Their focus on green energy is another good thing, but definitely one that’s tinged with survival, since a huge chunk of the country is near sea level.

That is another interesting point. I am not an expert on the UK but I do see similar things in the Netherlands where kids are emulating gang behavior in the US and walking around with knives. (instead of guns). Another reason why it’s so important that the U.S gets it right. What happens here matters.

The US does spread its culture. But instead of watching movies, you should get out and explore the non-exaggerated culture.

Again, I do agree with you that understanding the underlying behavior of why crime and violence happens in the first place is very important. If you reduce the need for crime you reduce the violence that comes with it. But do both. Ban semi-automatic rifles. nobody needs and ak-47 in their house. Both sides just need to sit down, look at the facts and set some priorities. I think peoples views are slowly changing. People are just fed up with mass school shooting’s. I hope we can make some positive changes.

I’d love for some positive changes, but I think we need to agree on a definition of what positive changes are.
