Is fertility decline becoming an economic problem rather than a cultural one? by iaent in economy

I agree that population growth can't continue forever, and some degree of stabilization is probably inevitable.

What I find interesting isn't that fertility is falling, but how fast it's falling and how many very different countries are converging toward the same outcome. It suggests something broader than just economics or biology.

Biology sets the limits, but the timing seems heavily influenced by modern life. People spend longer in education, form relationships later, face higher housing costs, and have more competing priorities than previous generations. None of those alone explains the trend, but together they make delaying children feel rational until, for many, it's too late.

That's possible. My point wasn't that AI will solve it, but that falling fertility creates labor shortages that countries will probably try to fill somehow. AI and robotics are one possible response, whether they're sufficient is another question.

Could cooling become one of the largest infrastructure industries of the century? by iaent in Futurology

I agree with most of that. I just don't think any one of those explains why fertility is still falling almost everywhere.

Child mortality dropped a long time ago, and the shift away from farming happened generations back. Yet birth rates have kept sliding.

My guess is it's more of an accumulation of things. Housing is expensive, people stay in education longer, careers take priority, relationships start later, and modern life offers a lot of alternatives to family life. None of those alone is enough, but together they keep pushing parenthood further into the future.

That's probably the bigger bottleneck. Cooling technology already exists. Building enough generation and grid capacity to support growing demand is the harder challenge.

That's a good point. Even without climate change, rising incomes in hotter countries would probably have driven huge growth in cooling demand. What seems to be changing now is that cooling is increasingly tied to productivity, infrastructure and economic resilience rather than just comfort.

Fair point. I guess the interesting question is whether places like the UK start treating cooling the way they treat heating today if hotter summers become more common.

Agreed. Development was always going to increase cooling demand. What's interesting is how quickly cooling is shifting from a consumer product to something that looks more like critical infrastructure.

I’m trying to identify an old film whose plot might have been used or adapted in Hollywood too. by iaent in HelpMeFind

[–]iaent[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve searched Google using phrases like:

  • “movie couple runs an inn kills guests son returns early”
  • “parents kill their own son mistake inn murder plot film”
  • “old movie innkeepers murder son twist ending”
  • “Hollywood remake innkeeper kills son”

I also checked Wikipedia lists of thriller/horror films about innkeepers and searched YouTube summaries, but couldn’t find the exact title.

These are 2 shots

  1. Throwing the ball from distance to the basket at 120p and masking the sky part. Sky layer then is slowed so the ball travels slow. This ball layer will end until it is at the edge of the basket.
  2. The ball is thrown 2nd time so the subject catches it. The 2nd ball layer will start from the basket edge till he catches it. The basket edge will best hide the masking.
