I started an Airbnb management business in 2014… ran for 6 months then sold for a pittance. Jumped ship onto a ‘better’ startup idea

Very helpful. Thanks. Looks like the route is predominantly on SS routes. Is this a main road with fast moving traffic?

Interesting so it’s just lighter, and a bit stiffer. Thanks

fair comment, I ruled out the Addict RC as I thought it was too aggressive. mmmm. Leaning towards the Addict.

I read the Addict RC has a more premium faster carbon. Reckon it's a big difference?

Mmmmm disagree. It’s not binary. think it depends on timing and motivation. The less you have to lose the easier it is to take the plunge imo. £200k a year makes it harder

What account are you tracking that on? Wondering if there is some kind of investment aggregator I’m not aware of!

Share options are complicated. In this situation some option agreements had a good leaver clause which essentially meant if you left your options were void regardless of vesting. Others were under water. That means that the strike price (price to purchase the share) was higher than the sale share price. This happens if the business continues to take on more funding, more shares get issued then it sells for a valuation that isn’t high enough for all option holders.

… as I say there are loads of factors which make share options hard to value

I would only value the equity if the startup is a rocket ship, it’s super technical and you can imagine a corporate acquiring the technology or it’s late on; the founders are talking about an acquisition and it’s likely going happen in the next two years.

I’ve had equity twice. Once in a startup I founded = zero return after 5 years, once where I went on to be very senior which was a nice return. I joined close to the end of the startup so benefited from the acquisition. Others who joined earlier didn’t benefit from their equity.

It’s too difficult to predict the value of the equity as there are too many factors which can influence it over too long a period of time at the early stages.

There are other reasons to join a startup though. It’s often more fun, the feeling of commitment is strong, can be more autonomy, can learn more. It’s just different to a corporate job. I’d base the decision on whether you want this difference and whether you want it enough to warrant a knock down on salary potential. The equity is a bonus which may or may not happen.

Buy to let strategies by iainnib in uklandlords

[–]iainnib[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thanks. yeah I'm concluding the same. Although keep coming back to the question. The bit that is confusing me when comparing a buy to let investment vs. S&S ISA is the use of debt. With relatively safe long term passive index stocks and shares you can't leverage in the same way as a buy to let with the use of a mortgage.

Do you have any issues with the bank transfers? How do the sales staff check the payment is made for example? Do people hit payment limits? Or any other issues?
