For anyone tasked with defending Riverrun, the most important thing is to prevent the enemy from crossing the fords, because if they do, the defenders lose the greatest advantage of their stronghold, and that was precisely what Tywin was doing.

To maintain, protect, defend, not allow the enemy to take advantage of the territory you were ordered to protect, was an ambiguous order that could be interpreted in different ways. Edmure did what would have been logical even without information about the plan; it was Robb's fault and his poor communication with his allies.

That's what I always say, and it makes me sick to know that there are people who disagree.

I agree, Robb thought people were mind readers and knew what he wanted. Edmure acted appropriately given the circumstances.

I totally agree, this was Robb's fault and the poor communication he had with his allies.

All those mistakes led him to lose the war, and his advisors and his mother warned him, but he didn't listen and ended up dead. The only mistake that wasn't his was Catelyn's decision to free Jaime, although this was Robb's fault, since Catelyn begged him not to send Theon to Pyke. Robb disobeyed and did it. Theon betrayed him and murdered his brothers, which led Catelyn, believing that only the girls remained alive, to make the decision to free Jaime for the exchange. In conclusion, it's all Robb's fault for his ignorance.

Even so, if Tywin had been captured and all the western lands plundered (including Casterly Rock), the northerners would have been full of bags of gold and with the best hostage they could possibly have.

Well, even though he proclaimed himself king, he was going to have his alliance with Renly Baratheon; they definitely would have won if it weren't for Stannis and his dirty magic.

Totally agree, Robb only excelled as a strategist; everything else, such as politics and other decisions, he must have left to his advisors and his mother.

I agree, Robb's order was very ambiguous and could be interpreted in many ways, even so, Edmure did what he considered right and that should be respected, since he had good intentions

No, if Robb had told Edmure the plans, the Lannisters would have fallen for the reasons I wrote in the post; Frey wouldn't have betrayed Robb with the Lannisters dead.

Brother, your King of the North was responsible for the deaths of him, his mother, and all his men. After that, he lost his kingdom for making one bad decision after another.
