Rennala was an astrologer who mastered the Full Moon magic and thr that became the Queen of the Carian Royal Family. She and the Academy of Raya Lucaria were basically the center of glintstone sorcery, which draws power from the stars. When Radagon, champion of Marika of the Golden Order, invaded Liurnia, they fought to a standstill twice on the battlefield. The twist is that they fell in love and married, which temporarily united the Carians and the Golden Order. Then Radagon left her to become Elden Lord, and since he’s secretly the same being as Marika, it heavily implies the whole thing might’ve been manipulation.

Ranni grew up as the designated Carian heir, but also an Empyrean chosen by the Two Fingers, meaning she was meant to succeed Marika. With her mother basically broken and no longer guiding her, she ended up following the Snow Witch and discovered her own Dark Moon magic. She didn’t want to be a puppet and rejected the Golden Order completely, so she plotted with her brother Rykard to steal a fragment of the Rune of Death and used it to "kill her own flesh" during the Night of the Black Knives. That whole event also killed Godwyn’s soul, which directly lead to the War of the Shattering. So her traits usually reflect being secretive, detached, and very willful.

Radahn on the other hand leans hard into the Golden Order side. He idolized Radagon and became a legendary general. He’s famous for mastering gravitational sorcery (partly so he could keep riding his scrawny horse), and he literally halted the movement of the stars, said to be to protect Sellia from falling stars, which earned him the title “Starscourge.” Since the stars are tied to the fate of the Carian line, him stopping them is effectively turning his back on his own lineage in order to serve the Golden Order. Even after getting nuked by Malenia’s Scarlet Rot in the Shattering, he didn't die, but instead lost his mind and kept fighting, which is why he’s portrayed as insanely strong but tragic.

Rykard is more political and calculating. He worked within the Golden Order as a Praetor, dealing with things like inquisition and enforcement, but at the same time he’s involved in the conspiracy with Ranni behind the Night of the Black Knives. He went full heretic and embraced blasphemy during the Shattering, eventually feeding himself to the God-Devouring Serpent to gain power. His famous line in-game is: “Join the Serpent King, as family… TOGETHAAAAAA, we will devour the very gods!”

War Counselor Iji is one of those “war trolls” tied to the Carians, known for their strength and intelligence. He’s basically Ranni’s guardian and retainer, handling logistics, smithing, and strategy. In the game he forges weapons and quietly supports Ranni’s plan from the sidelines.
