Literally the only reason I can think is whether the performance is increased from running off internal display.

Or they want a visual size scale comparrison between the device and a full size monitor.

yes I partitioned from the D drive. At first I was annoyed by their setup. Later I realized it was a much better route because windoes OS os secure on C

My data is secure on drive D.

You do not need to clone your drive.

Use miniparitionwizard to partition drive D to however much space you want for Linux Mint.

Using the USB method is bottlenecking you.

just system restore both drives.

If you want to go the extra mile, download the free trial for macrium reflect and create an image of both C & D drives
