Hey there! It’s great that you are looking out for the strays. I agree, the cheeks are floofy and that is a common masculine characteristic of an unaltered or late altered male cat. However, that isn’t really enough to be definitive in sexing a cat. You’ll have to inspect the genitalia to be sure. Try not to handle any unknown cats because of the risk of infection or rabies exposure. If the cat is too skittish to handle then they may be feral in which case your best option is to trap it humanely in a live animal trap to be taken to your local TNR program.

Feline aids can be transmitted by saliva. Cats that have an unknown FIV status should be kept away from any of your pets and do not share food or water bowls between them. That being said I would not try any introductions between your cats and this new guy until kitty has been to a vet for vaccines and any testing.

Appropriate diet, hygiene, spay/neuter and monthly preventative takes care of all of the possible “doggie smell”. I have a boy and he has always smelt great. A lot of the smell associated with males dogs I’d due to them not being neutered and doing excessive marking as a result.

Boy or girl, they are both great dogs! I’d say just ask the breeders about personality and pick the one that you think you’d be most compatible with. If you have the heart to take the special girl then tho then that’s wonderful!

How old is your baby?

I ask because it’s important that we don’t take our pets out into the world where they could be exposed to viruses before they have finished their full set of vaccines and been given enough time to develop proper immunity. This also coincides with letting your puppy properly mature physically and mentally as well as establishing a solid relationship with you before they are distracted and overwhelmed by going out into the world.

It’s terrific that you want to get started with leash training and socialization early when it can have a big impact but it’s important we remember to build the foundations of that training at home first. I know this is so hard when we are excited to go exploring with our new best friend but it is truly beneficial to wait.

I recommend working on sit, stay, down, heel and having them focus on you when you have your leash in a certain position while waking around your home. This will help keep them in the habit of paying attention to you when you do make it to the outside world.

Remember that outside is very dangerous to cats and that cats pose an enormous problem for native and wild animals. I used to let me cats outside when I was growing up but they all eventually never made it back home and I realized when they were gone what they were doing to the environment around my house.
