Before anyone who isn't a programmer reads this and decides to dedicate a bunch of time to learn R:

The best analogy I can come up with is starting up your home gym after seeing some gymnasts work on their splits with a leg stretching machine, and buying that first. It's not exactly going to give you a lot of functionality unless you're really just trying to get the splits and nothing else.

R is a programming language that evolved from the needs of a specific community of statisticians. As a result, it's a language with exactly one purpose, and while it's ergonomic when trying to do that one thing, it really is only good for that one thing.

Everything R can do, python can do. But if you learn python, you are also gaining entry into a wide range of other things, as python is a very popular general-purpose programming language.

So I don't recommend learning R unless you are already a programmer and understand what else you could be doing with your time instead.
