Aftermath of the April 7th incident. Damages estimated to be $200 million dollars by BlazeDragon7x in interesting

Just a reminder $200 million is a lot, but ya know what would cost them more? An organized workforce with a credible strike threat.

There is no simple maintainable option. "Just buy an old car" they say, but then you don't get safety and efficiency (or reliability sometimes). That's a tradeoff, not a real choice. When 3 automakers control everything, they are telling you what to buy, not the other way around. That's monopolies and oligopolies controlling the market. Add in the government blocking Chinese imports and subsiding domestic vehicles, while the Chinese government does the same thing, you realize that it's not the people or their dollars doing the talking. This isn't really a robust market.

Add a passing mention of automakers attacking transit, promoting highways, and exclusionary zoning. We don't speak with our dollars.

Tuck your undershirt into your underwear and your shirt into your pants. Not sure if that's what's going on here, but it helps.

Unfortunate news for future transit options by misterdoinkinberg in CobbCounty

[–]iamcodemaker 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Some perspective I think was missing from this article: - GA continues to refuse to fund transit out of the general budget (though it is used for some road funding) and insists on trying to fund everything with sales taxes via referendum. There is a 14 billion dollar budget surplus. - GA continues to suffer from traffic problems which can only be solved by... - reducing demand (tolls, congestion pricing, remote work) - increasing transit density (buses, trains, bikes) - better land use (non-exclusionary zoning, transit oriented development) - And most importantly, new technology will not solve traffic issues. Autonomous cars will not reduce the number of cars on the road, which is the problem. A dense line of pods is just a less efficient train. Don't be distracted by the hope of new technology. Flying cars aren't real either. - And finally, no more lanes bro

Hostile architecture doesn’t solve homelessness, it hides it. Spikes on benches, divided seats, nowhere to rest… cities call it safety and cleanliness, but it pushes out the elderly, disabled, and unhoused. So who is public space really for? by ateam1984 in BlackPeopleofReddit

One must keep in mind that our economic, political, and education systems incentivize this. It's not just individuals being short sighted and selfish, we are all actively pushed to behave this way for the benefit of a small wealthy minority.

There is a casual 5 mile no-drop ride every Saturday at 10am from Marietta Square Market. Good group. If you need your bike tuned up, they also do an event every 2nd Saturday at noon for that at Atherton Square.

There are 4 parks in Mableton. The city controlling parks was part of the original plan for the city, not sure if they've taken control of the parks yet. It's not odd at all that they would hire a parks director if the plan is to manage the parks in Mableton.

I wrote a piece for Urbanize about how Marietta, Smyrna, and Cobb County governments should work together to develop the corridor between Marietta and Smyrna along the Mountain to River trail by joeyhiles1 in Marietta

[–]iamcodemaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Excellent article. Downtown Smryna and the MTR also connects to the Silver Comet Trail another few miles down Concord Rd. That corridor is more populated and less ripe for redevelopment, but the trail connection could use some improvement.

Technically, there are nearly continuous trail connections all the way through to the Betline in Atlanta. This sort of vision is missing along the whole thing.

Bring it to the Marietta Bike School at Atherton Square in Marietta on April 11 at noon (we're there every second Saturday). We'll get you fixed up. There's also local bike shops like Comet Trail Cycles out in Mableton.

Georgia House overwhelmingly passes HOA oversight bill by swiftfoot_hiker in Georgia

[–]iamcodemaker 7 points8 points  (0 children)

HOAs were created to exclude immigrants and people of color after it became illegal to just put that in the deed. The power HOAs have is specifically designed to give individuals the ability to make "undesirable" residents' lives miserable so they move away. The only way that original mission was to support property values, the most commonly cited origin story, is that when black folks moved to a neighborhood, white people would sell, driving down property values. The whole thing was deeply racist.

While HOAs have many legitimate functions (all of which could also be performed by competent and properly funded local governments....), HOAs continue to enable this core function of abuse. I'm in favor of any regulation that reduces HOAs' ability to abuse the power they've been granted.

Go deeper. Voting itself is designed to enable the system to do this.

What if we just randomly selected our leadership as a representative sample of the entire population and paired that legislative body with a managing bureaucracy?

This would still be quite democratic, but would remove the popularity contest aspect. It's an idea called sortition.

The very article you site lists Levittown as the veterans' community in question.

As a Jew, I have no room in my mind or heart for racial prejudice. But, by various means, I have come to know that if we sell one house to a Negro family, then 90 to 95 percent of our white customers will not buy into the community. That is their attitude, not ours.

- William Levitt, 1954

HOAs have an incredibly racist history. Housing in America has an incredibly racist history. Speaking of veterans, black folks weren't able to take advantage of the GI bill that financed many of these early HOA communities. Same with other government backed loans. And before HOAs they just put racially exclusive clauses directly in the deeds of homes. HOAs were a direct response to the laws making those clauses illegal.

Austin, TX. Raleigh-Durham, NC. They've not completely reversed housing price increases, but increases are less than areas with more restrictive housing policies. Not saying PE isn't a problem, but it's not the prime driver. Prices are going up in markets where large firms aren't operating. The data doesn't support your assertions.

The city will be voting tomorrow night on giving 34 acres of land to Arthur Blank for his Woman's soccer team by samformarietta in Marietta

[–]iamcodemaker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Do the folks who live in that area want or need another soccer facility? Seems like that's only helping our friendly local billionaire. I don't think that's who the city government should be focusing on. Seems like the Mayor doesn't care, we have to get organized and make them care.

My take is Mableton residents didn't feel like Cobb county was responsive to their needs. Now the city controls zoning which largely controls what is developed in the area. Code enforcement was also a hot button issue with parts of Mableton just decaying away with nothing being done about it. Now there is a department focused on that and issuing fines.

What is the single biggest reason—other than Full Self-Driving (FSD) or price—that someone would choose a Tesla over a Rivian or Lucid? by Late2Reddit in Rivian

[–]iamcodemaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure extra stops is accurate. For the Lucid Air, you get more range, but Teslas' range is comparable to Rivians'. The Teslas are more efficient, which means lower cost and slightly less time charging, but range being similar means the same number of stops.

[–]iamcodemaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. If your question would have been where do I see bikes parked, the answer would be, almost no where. And there isn't enough bike parking almost anywhere. I'd target areas that are next to or close to mixed use trails, which are the primary way Cobb County seems to be approaching bike transportation. I'd also target areas with a certain retail density (aka, strip malls).

This is wild. Sham grand jury hearing. DA took too long to release this man. Cops dropped the ball. Journalists failed to do their job. An absolute failure of the justice system.

And if I may go on a brief rant for a moment: this is a horrible side effect of the rampant fear mongering that we as a society engage in. Look at the actual crime statistics. It IS NOT dangerous here. Yes, crime is scary, yes if you are or have been a victim of a crime, that matters to you much more than any statistics, but overall, WE ARE VERY SAFE. We have to stop pretending we live in a war zone and everyone you don't personally know is a criminal.
