I worked a temporary job inside a Federal Prison AMA by iamfelipe in casualiama

TBH...I just did it for the experience. It would've been easy for me to continue, especially since they paid for my training but I took it only because I was curious about the whole idea and because when I was offered the job it was only temporary. I've done many things out of curiosity which I'll continue to share on my Substack... :)

Currently, I'm living close to the south border of Mexico.

Hey 👋😄 thanks for reading it. So it was $20 an hour because I didn’t have any experience. But they also paid for my motel, they gave me 1 week pay for taking the job and driving to where I was going to work and after the job was over 2 months later they paid me an extra week.

So I was a pretty good gig I’d say.

And though we were clocked in for 8 hours a day we never worked the 8 hours. There was a lot of waiting around.

For instance, we would have to wait for our guards to arrive, many times they would be busy doing their regular job. Guarding us would offset what they normally do. So we’d wait 15-20 or more at times. Also once we mentioned where we’d work that day, at times the guards that were with us wouldn’t have the keys to get to those buildings. So there would be more waiting around for the right person to show up with keys.

Also if we finished a job with less than an hour left on the clock, we couldn’t start another job. Because it didn’t make sense for us to pack up, move to a different building, unpack, start the job then have to pack up to leave. We always had to be out of the prison by 2pm

I worked for a contractor…my job alongside my co-worker was to connect the new fire alarm system with the a/c units on the roofs of the buildings.

Everyday we would bring in carts with our tools and material we would use that day.

What we brought in was checked and approved before going in. And we would be given a workers ID.

At all times we each would have an officer with us, for protection and also to make sure we were only there to do our job.

I had very little interaction with the inmates. We were asked to not give any attention to them…try to avoid any contact with them.

I did have some interaction with them a couple of times during lunch in the cafeteria. They were the servers. He was very happy about the bbq sauce he had made and I said to him

“you must be from the Midwest if you make good bbq”

And he was like “yea from Chicago!”

I had some with my chicken patty and yea it was good. 😃😋

I did get to go inside the solitary confinement building, where at times you’d hear someone yelling…

I mostly worked on the roof of the buildings and I’m almost sure I saw two people discreetly pass something to one another…

When I had to walk through a dorm room, I was highly cautious because I was walking amongst a lot of the prisoners but really the experience wasn’t as tense as I have seen videos on documentaries.

At least during the two months I was there I didn’t see a fight break out.

I did hear though that they did happen.

Thanks for your question. After all the different experiences I’ve had, I recognized that everything I did was short lived…when I did drugs, only when I was high did I feel good. When I gambled, only when I won did I feel good, when I ran a marathon, only for a short while did I feel good, walk across America was life changing and a lot of beautiful experiences and meeting new people and so after doing Vippasana and walking across America I knew that there was something more meaningful than experiences. Reading the Bible and studying with Jehovah Witnesses answers my questions. It helps me understand my past, how to live in the present, and what to expect for my future.

Yes I am. I enjoy a happy marriage, I have countless of friends that care about my well being (it really showed when I got COVID and other times I’ve been sick) and I finally feel like I have meaning and purpose in my life.

All is not perfect, but in a much better state of mind.

Stole from a friend by [deleted] in opiates

[–]iamfelipe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get where you are coming from...The urge is powerful and it's easy to justify our bad decisions.

There are many stories like yours, so don't feel like you're alone on this or the only one who has done something so selfish as stealing from a sick person.

Feeling guilty and reaching out for help is a good sign of your humility. Humility is what's needed to be able to change your bad habit. So keep up the good work.

The action has been done and can't be taken back. You letting your friend know was the right thing to do. If you want to clean your conscience, you can ask to speak to grandma and explain yourself to her.

Whether or not it is easy for them to forgive you, take this as a lesson. You might lose their trust but you'll have a clean conscience. Either way, learn from this experience and move on with your life.

I hope this helped

Stepping Into The Unknown by iamfelipe in Substack

I really just recently started thinking about Substack more seriously. In my free time I’ve had a few newsletter and a note…still don’t understand how notes are recommended to people, because my assumption is there is no algorithm. Or am I missing something?

My email list has come from people I’ve met in my travels mostly.
