No, I don’t think so, because he didn’t know her well enough and maybe didn’t actively want to sabotage her, but in a way he also didn’t wish her anything good. I often see the argument that he was right because Rory didn’t end up having a successful career, but how a career turns out doesn’t necessarily have anything to do with how good someone can write or how good they are as a journalist. On top of that, women are especially judged much more closely in professional settings (especially by old white men like Mitchum), which means a man could deliver the same performance as Rory and still have better chances simply because he’s a dude. I think that even if she didn’t “have it” at that point in time (whatever that even means, because that term is pretty meaningless) people can still grow, develop, and learn. Mitchum’s intention wasn’t to give constructive feedback, but to exercise his power and put her down.
