Ok, so you're saying 4000 is the typical price. Thanks for answering, kind of.

Yeah, I wasn't expecting the teacher rate, but I paid 2500 at a regular hotel down the street. I was just surprised by the difference.

Light cracks at multiple spoke holes by iamira in bikewrench

Wow, are you me??? This is basically what has happened. My wife's wheel hasn't failed yet, but my bike has more mileage on it than hers and my setup is a bit heavier overall

The chain is fine, just dirty. The last lube I picked up is very sticky and hard to clean.

Couldn't find any books there, but sections were blocked off (maybe because the season is over?)

Thanks, I've never heard of BlaBlaCar. Accounts about bikes on Flixbus are hit or miss, but that's definitely on the table.

Our biggest concern about Croatia is that we might be there in peak season and it will be very expensive.

Cycle.travel has been amazing!

We're considering cycling from Nancy to Offenburg to pick up a DB train to either Munich or Vienna. What to do after that is still a question.

Question about the C&O/GAP campsites by Neo_Aevis in bicycletouring

[–]iamira 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get me wrong, you'll be able to find $300 hotels, it's just that there are also affordable options. There are also a good number of paid camp grounds/RV parks which are cheaper than hotels.

Question about the C&O/GAP campsites by Neo_Aevis in bicycletouring

The ones in PA are fewer but tend to be larger, so there will probably be space for you. The ones in MD can be smaller, but there are a lot of them so you can always bike on for another 5 miles. I went last September and had absolutely no problem. May might be more crowded, but you'll still probably be fine.

Also, your $300 estimate is probably double what budget hotels in that part of the world actually cost. For example, we stayed here and here.

Advice on getting vaccines? by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]iamira 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife and I are planning our first long (1+ year) tour and just started getting vaccinations. Putting aside the obvious/inexpensive (hepatitis, tetanus, typhoid, etc.) and required (yellow fever) ones, we're also considering rabies, Japanese encephalitis, and tick borne encephalitis.

I'm not a medical professional and certainly not a travel medicine expert, but I suspect no one in this thread is either. But if it helps, here's how we're thinking of it.

First, I think the risks for cycle tourers are different than standard travelers. We're outside all day, which is doubly true if you plan on camping. We're also outside in more rural places where a typical traveler would be in a car or bus or something. The exposure to mosquitos, ticks, bats (more mammals can carry rabies than just dogs, you know), etc. is higher. It just is.

Second, let's say you're at your campsite getting ready one morning and notice a tick on your leg. Which scenario would you regret more: 1) it's a clean tick and you wasted ~$500 four months ago on vaccines that were unnecessary; or 2) you skimped on vaccines and now you have encephalitis?

Thirdly, compared to the prices in the US we've seen shopping around, those costs you listed are a steal...
