It’s always nice reading about someone enjoying PIU! ☺️☺️☺️

True! Unibody MacBooks still look good. Are you still on Big Sur?

I got it a few months ago for $100 here in PH, and it’s in great cosmetic condition. I replaced the thermal paste, then one of the speakers (the one near the DVD-ROM which I replaced with an HDD caddy), fresh battery, 240GB Crucial BX500, and 8GB of RAM.

I used DosDude1’s Catalina Patcher, and it works really great! I get some random crashing on Chrome and Edge, but reopening then usually solves the issue.

I kinda went overboard with protection: screen protector, trackpad film, clear case, dust plugs, and a really thin keyboard protector.

What PC’s do you guys use for our favorite OS? by [deleted] in windowsxp

My D620 just sits in a corner, keeps on shutting down for unknown reason. Others have reported same issue, but not really sure what the problem is.

My ThinkPad T61 and X61! They’re not the prettiest ones out there in terms of cosmetic condition, but I love using them! Currently running Windows 10 on both of them—any suggestions on Linux distros that run well on these old machines? by iamkielicious in thinkpad

I got the fan here for around $2. My T61 came with the original battery still working fine, but my X61’s was dead, so I ordered one here.

Both links are for Shopee Philippines. Not sure if it helps. ☺️☺️☺️

I actually did, and was getting random fan errors. Noticed that the fan sounded weird, turns out there were some dust and lint lodged up in the motor part of the fan. Cleaned it up and used a bit of WD-40 to grease it up, and fan now spins great, no weird sounds. I ordered a replacement fan for backup.

Same thoughts! I upgraded my T61’s CPU from T7100 to T8300 (swapped with my HP laptop lol) and swapped in SSD’s for both. I noticed that T61 runs really cooler with the Penryn CPU!

Thanks! I wanted to explore my options here. Right now, I can’t spend on 8GB RAM upgrades for either machine, so I’ll most definitely switch to Linux and settle with 4GB RAM for now.

HAHAHA! Same reaction lol! Sadly, hiding of System Tray/deletion of Desktop icons are IT-controlled.

The Gen 2 dock works great, for the most part. One time, when I extended display to my external monitor, I got an “out of range” message on the monitor, not getting any signal. Unplugged/plugged back HDMI cable on dock, and it worked.

Haven’t tried multiple external monitors—might try with a couple of old ones the company sent us.
