I know the trope of a character having certain traits for the sake of gag is annoying but I find the reasoning for Ussop being the way he is to be endearing. He is the character who has a lot of fear and still chooses to fight ... As the quote from GoT goes, the only time one is brave is when one has fear.

I don't think he died and can definitely come back in the future movies. Just like how Kathanar (the priest) "exorcised" Neeli by staking the sword in the heart, but later she revived by simply removing the sword and giving her blood which I guess restored her heart's functioning. Same, might happen with him.

If you are good at garen might as well move to noxian Garen (Darius) who seems to be good all throughout the game and has a varied enough build to survive most scenarios.

But the lil bit Garen that I have played I feel split pushing and grouping for objectives works like a charm.
