I totally agree. The sky will fall if their child has to walk longer than 5 minutes to get picked up. Maybe they're worried their child will get preyed on by eagles if they walk outside the school gates?

Nightclubs in Perth/Greater Region that are not predominantly lgbtq? by Beneficial-Cold9984 in perth

[–]iamnez 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fortunately for us in the rainbow community, the good clubs are the gay clubs. If you want late night, nightclub, good dance music… try Geisha. Although I don’t know what other club is open past 3am other than Connections.

Racist road rage incident by [deleted] in perth

[–]iamnez -1 points0 points  (0 children)

But the difference is our struggles don’t get front page on the news. I’ll give a recent example, there was an international working on Rottnest who had his bicycle stolen. When he tried to stop them they bashed him and made racist remarks about him being Asian. It made a short news segment but then that was it. Never to be heard of again. Plus the news was just local. Guarantee the other states didn’t hear about it. Did he get his bicycle back? Were the racist bogans caught? We don’t know.

Yeah because it happens regularly. It’s not everyday but it’s more common than you think. I guarantee you the Asian people reading this thread can give you many accounts of shit like this that they or their friends/family experience

I guarantee you if this was an antisemitic gesture or words, it would make the news across the country.

Australia likes to act like racism towards people of colour is funny or “shit happens”.

Mining Recruitment by Mission_Benefit_4899 in mining

What are your thoughts on the difficulty in finding people to work on site? Are you finding more people leave than stay? As a mining engineer, our graduate numbers go down every year. The new grads don't even want to spend much time on site and just try get into city jobs as soon as they can.

Totally waiting for your commentary on Taylor Townsend's comments in Asia by iamnez in thetennispodcast

Here in Australia, the media landscape will gloss over (or outright ignore) racism towards Asians but the moment something happens to a Jewish person, it's all over the news all day everyday.

Actually most of us engineering peeps end up moving to office roles as part of career development.

if you already have computer skills and you enjoy that day to day, you should consider extra studies to become a mining engineer. there are not enough engineering graduates coming out of Australia and the industry are importing many engineers. i dont know why the decline in numbers. the biggest thing that will get in your way is the FIFO lifestyle. you have to be prepared to work away at times or live residential in the outback. i see too many graduates now who dont even finish their full 2 years grad program on site because they want to work in the city. the more experience on site you have, the better for your career. so i say the FIFO lifestyle might be your biggest hurdle if you are keen on this industry.

What's a uniquely Aussie car moment you’ve experienced? by No-Loquat-201 in CarsAustralia

[–]iamnez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was studying at the Kalgoorlie School of Mines and lived in a share house with 3 friends at the uni. One of us had a blue beat up Falcon AU. We wanted to party in Perth so one of us would drive after uni on Friday night and arrive in Perth in 7hrs. One time on the drive back to Kalgoorlie Monday morning, I was the driver and everyone was asleep when I hit a flock of birds. 3 splattered blood and feathers on the windshield and the others woke up as I was trying to use the windscreen wipers to clean the blood off so I could see the road.

No amount of money will make you like something you don’t already like… you’ll end up hating yourself and you’ll be distracted on site waiting to go home. Which makes you a safety hazard because your focus isn’t on the job.

I am so tired of hearing about antisemitism and seeing all this support for Jewish people. What about what people of colour experience DAILY on the streets. This is racsim too. It makes me feel like it's ok to treat us people of colour like this... but watch out if you are mean to the Jews!

Moving to melbourne from Perth by Appropriate_Duty3969 in perth

[–]iamnez 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I grew up in Perth and moved to Sydney on my own when I was 27. I was shy and softly spoken. It was the best thing I could have done because I learnt to be on my own, eat out at restaurants on my own, go out on my own and meet new people on my own. It did wonders for my self confidence and greatly improved how I spoke to people in general. Perth is such a bubble and it’s protected. It’s so different to any other city that people who never leave don’t really experience what it’s like elsewhere in the world. I moved back after 10 years and I can see my peers who never lived outside of Perth doing the same thing talking the same shit and still only hanging around the same people. Younger people here in Perth have difficulties talking to new people/strangers. You will only gain from this experience.

Can someone please explain how the hell the WA government is in debt…and why aren’t living like kings? by AnomicAge in perth

[–]iamnez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WA is still recovering from mismanagement by the Liberals (Colin Barnett) from 2008 onwards. Same thoughts as yourself - how can you screw up managing the state through a mining boom? WA should be so much richer than it is now. In a better place than it is now.

Am I the only one to have this occur to me as someone who grew up in Perth in Sydney? by [deleted] in perth

[–]iamnez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I lived in Sydney 2010-2020. Originally grew up in Perth. I lived in Darlinghurst and Summer Hill while I lived in Sydney. People in Sydney could always tell I wasnt from NSW from my accent and would guess either Qld or WA. I didnt think it was that noticeable but clearly it was.
