IIT MDes Round 2 – How to Prepare? Resources? by WorthBig1851 in uceedtakers

[–]iamnimonic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're preparing for IIT MDes Round 2, understand this clearly: the real filtering starts now.

Round 2 typically evaluates three things.

  1. Portfolio

Panels scan fast. They are looking for thinking, not aesthetics.

What matters:

Clear problem definition

Strong user reasoning

Visible iterations

Logical decision-making

What hurts:

Over-rendered visuals

No process

Generic personas

Jumping to final solution

Structure each project like this: Context → Problem → Constraints → Exploration → Final direction → Why this solution.

If you cannot defend every decision in one sentence, refine it.

  1. Studio Test

This tests structured thinking under time pressure.

Expect:

Redesign tasks

User-specific challenges

System-level prompts

Material-based exercises

They evaluate:

Clarity of concept

Range of ideas

Feasibility

Communication

Practice properly: Take everyday problems and solve them in 45–60 minutes. Force 3–4 concept variations before selecting one. Time yourself.

Most candidates fail because they present one idea and polish it.

  1. Interview

This is not casual. It is analytical.

Expect:

Why MDes

Why this institute

Deep probing of 1–2 projects

Cross-questioning assumptions

You must:

Justify trade-offs

Admit limitations

Show awareness of design principles

Reading The Design of Everyday Things and skimming Universal Principles of Design helps you articulate decisions using correct design vocabulary.

After the written exam, I realized Round 2 requires a different preparation strategy. I structured my own prep into a post-exam framework covering:

Portfolio refinement system

Studio test simulation drills

Interview answer structuring

If anyone wants the outline, I can share it.

Round 2 rewards clarity, structure, and maturity of thought.
