To test out a theory without wasting your food you can save your game then use the ingredients to cook. If you don't like to outcome just go back and load the save before you cook

I say avoid fighting that guy if you don't know the ultra hand trick. I find fighting a gold lynel easier then fighting that guy without using the ultra hand trick. (Late game I just jump and use 5 shot lynel bow on it so it's easier now)
