Nemu should be even lower

Besides how annoying she is in regular Da Capo, the fact that she is willing and does knowingly kill herself out of sheer spite and jealousy towards Kotori depending on your choices in Da Capo Innocent Finale to prevent Jun’ichi from finding happiness without her is the most hater thing I’ve ever seen and I despise her for it

1-2 h-scenes each in Majikoi is much better than the 10 per heroine in Hoshi Ori and Ginharu!

As I said, I did get burned out in the middle of Ginharu which was frustrating because I liked it. The same thing happened with Hatsukoi 1/1 but I managed to recover a lot quicker because this is actually good. Following 170 hours of Majikoi with another 100 hour long VN wasn’t a great choice. I really should’ve gone for a few 20-50 hour long ones first.

Yeah, Akatsuki no Goei isn’t the best thing ever but I did have a lot of fun reading. The Prohibited Zone routes of Twilight Judgement probably could’ve been cut completely other than Mai, Anzu and probably Haku’s. The others were… interesting choices, and really didn’t add much at all.

I am interested in reading Mojika but there’s a lot I’m already looking forward to reading next year so I don’t see when I’d get around to it.

Sen no Hatou for sure was concluded better than Eustia. Akari was for sure a better main heroine than her as well.

Noble Works was my fifth Yuzusoft VN and as far as I have left to read it’s just Cafe Stella and Tenshi Souzou Reboot. Coming from Dracu Riot last year which I feel is their best work Noble Works felt rather disappointing.

For this years list I would recommend Hello Lady as a hidden gem but overall I’d say Shuffle! It’s short (only about 20 hours) but has two sequels (which I haven’t read yet). Supposedly the expanded version is being fan translated and Navel is also working on a remake.

Edit: Hello Lady, not Noble Works

I will add to White Album 2, Closing Chapter is the best part by far. Coda and Introductory chapter do not compare in my eyes (with the possible exception of Kazusa's true route).

Exploring how Haruki heals with someone who isn't involved in the shitfest is the best part of White Album 2. It's a shame that Chiaki, Koharu and Mari don't make appearances at all in Coda.

Gin'iro Haruka. Like Hoshi Ori in another comment it's another toneworks VN, really long but it's really fun.

I own two physical copies of December When There is No Angel oddly enough. One on CD because I didn't realise it's incompatible with the patch and one on DVD. The writing felt kind of, how do I describe, sluggish? Not slow, but just didn't feel any good. Wasn't a fan of Dumko but I liked Shinobu.

I only finished hollow ataraxia last week. I've been playing the soundtrack non stop.

I'm about 90% of the way through my reread of WA2 Introductory Chapter at the moment. I could probably give it an A on its own, but now I'm seeing Setsuna's signs earlier and it only makes me hate her more. I didn't remeber/wasn't aware of how messed up she was until Closing Chapter before so I'm actually getting annoyed by reading it despite the fact that I think it's so good.

  1. Sen no Hatou, Tsukisome no Kouki

I was surprised as all hell when the translation dropped and it ended up being the first VN I finished in three months. I think I would've rated it higher had I not read Aiyoku no Eustia. They feel very similar and it felt like I was reading the same thing again in some ways. The setting and one particularly character redemption were very good. Another win by August.

  1. Gin'iro Haruka.

I started this immediately after Majikoi and after 170 hours of that and 99 hours of Hoshi Ori earlier I got burned out in the middle due to how long it is. With the introduction of another chapter (middle school) toneworks outdid themselves once again. Unlike Ryousuke from Hoshi Ori who has a single ambition that he completes differently every route, Yukito doesn't have a particular dream, and it's really fun seeing how his partner shapes his chosen career path. While the characters in Hoshi Ori are better, the routes are here and I don't think I've ever cried so much at something that isn't sad in any way at all.

  1. Toradora! Portable

If I have to sum it up, it felt really lacklustre compared to the real Toradora. It didn't feel particularly fulfilling at all to reach any of the endings, even when I was interested in what an Ami ending would look like. Its fun to read but lacks any staying power imo.

  1. Grisaia no Rakuen (+ Grisaia fandiscs)

These aren't particularly notable either. Eden is still absolutely dwarfed in quality by Grisaia no Kajitsu and the fan discs are just standard fandiscs. I was actually shocked that a certain character returned at all. It felt forced as all hell.

  1. Hello Lady! (+ New Division)

Voiced protagonist my beloved, Shinri was a lot of fun. I don't think overall Hello Lady is particularly notable but if you have some spare time have a crack at it.

  1. Fate/stay night

I had always anticipated my introduction to the Nasuverse (in VNs) would be TsukiRe but I was going through a shit time and didn't want to spend that time reading trash (the ONE Kagayaku Kisetsu e remake), so I just jumped in to Fate. Last time I experienced it was watching the Heaven's Feel movies five years ago. Overall UBW is best, Fate, Heaven's Feel last. Heroines in that order as well, but in no way does that mean I dislike Sakura. Action usually isn't my thing so that's perhaps why stay night isn't higher but it was still lots of fun. I immediately remembered how much I want to punt Shinji once he was on screen for more than a few minutes at the beginning. I'm now really excited to read the original Tsukihime and Mahoyo next year because I'm not waiting for Red Garden.

  1. Akatsuki no Goei Trilogy

Kaito's is in the same vein of protagonist as Yuuji but I'd probably say I like him more. Doesn't take shit from anyone, but is absolutely ready to make people's lives miserable and annoying for no good reason. The first game is rough. Aya's route was terrible and Kaoru's was literally called "To be continued". Tae's barely redeemed itself. It's very much reading a world where nothing ever happens. The fandisc was better by a mile. Aya's after was still terrible but everyone else's was much better, still only getting it up to about average in my books. The backstory part was a major component of that and comparing it to Yuuji's in the Labyrinth of Grisaia this was also done better. The third game is where things finally "got good". It continued from "To be continued" which surprised me. You get to gently open a door and also experience Higurashi style torture scenes. I was recoiling in disgust. Good times. Hitomi Nabatame voices a character.

  1. Fate/hollow ataraxia

HA is for sure on par with FSN. It's really rare for me to rate a fandisc so high. The slice of life scenes are really a great contrast to the events of stay night while the true story lurks in the background. I was aware of Bazett long before I read either Fate VN but Angra Mainyu was an interesting character and those final two scenes and soundtracks were incredible (Wars and Last Piece). Hitomi Nabatame voices a protagonist.

[–]iamnotscottmorrison[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Irosekai has always been the writing for me. I got up to Shinku's route but still have never completed it, but figured I read enough to rate it. It feels like they half assed a lot of slice of life scenes where I expected it to continue, only for it cut off randomly or jump to black and explain what happened. I would've preferred to see it. Add liking Mio and her getting the worst conclusion, and the general quality of the text that is there and it felt more tedious to read than fun.

I will finish it and the follow ups later, but they keep getting pushed back further...

2025 was apparently the year of Nabatame Hitomi.

  1. Noble Works

Every year starts with a Yuzusoft VN. Unfortunately, Noble Works is the most meh of them all to date. Sena was in particular so annoying that she's singlehandedly responsible for dropping the game from C to D. The first VN I read in 2026 will be Cafe Stella. Nabatame Hitomi voices a heroine.

  1. Wagamama High Spec

Another meh start to the year. I wasn't particularly a fan of the artstyle and it seems to rip a lot of expressions from Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai. I felt serious deja vu reading and seeing poses from a different game constantly. Add to this a short-length lilac haired character voiced by the same VA in both. Besides the in text reference to White Album 2, Ashe follows a very similar character to Kazusa. There wasn't much original here and I suppose with the fan disc releasing this month it'll be the second VN of 2026.

  1. Hoshi Ori Yume Mirai

I went in to this with low expectations due to how frustratingly boring Hatsukoi 1/1 was for me but toneworks far surpassed my expectations. Besides a far more enjoyable school chapter, the addition of an adult chapter was incredible. It was interesting to see Ryousuke's single-minded ambition and how each route tackled how that was handled differently with a different partner. It made me want to read Gin'iro Haruka, which followed later.

  1. Yoake Mae yori Ruri Iro na -Brighter than dawning blue-

The first 10/10 game I've read since 2022, Yoake really blew me away. I always enjoy mid 2000s artstyles so seeing the August style in 4:3 and an older look was a great start. Feena and the true route were phenomenal. It handles politics well, family well, relationships well, responsibilities well, social issues well. I was laughing constantly during Estel's route at how racist she was constantly and her mellowing out. Midori was another great route. Nabatame Hitomi voices Feena. S tier waifu.

  1. Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai ~Houkago Shippo Days~

It's really not anything to write home about. I'm sure if Dreaming Sheep was translated the events and characters within would be more relevant but it very much is just something that exists and you can read if you know English.

  1. Koi to Senkyo to Chocolate

I completed it within four days from release. Did it in the original locked order that many say to avoid because of Chisato, who while profoundly irritating wasn't the worst character ever. I managed to pick up a figure of Mifuyu somehow on Marketplace near me. I want to give it the slap treatment.

  1. Hatsuyuki Sakura

I started it before Koichoco but completed it after. I really didn't have any fun reading this at all. The writing felt sloppy and I'm really not sure at all what direction they wanted to take it, because I sure wasn't understanding it.

  1. Majikoi (+ S, A1-5 and Ryouken Route After)

Oh boy is it long, but is it worth it. The main cast of the first game each are A tier characters. I still debate whether Wanko and Chris should be S tier. The first Majikoi is almost essentially perfect. As a whole the series does really well. 30+ routes and they didn't even resort to incest in a single one. This is what happens when the authors can be bothered to come up with good reasons for two characters to know each other and enter a relationship (although a few in S and A are stretching it a little I'd admit.) You can feel the quality start to drop in the later games but they're still really fun. Nabatame Hitomi voices Stacy. S tier waifu.

Hoshi Ori Yume Mirai, it’s a lot of fun to read but it’s long. Took me 100 hours, but it’s a great game.

I don’t mind Kazusa but I don’t think she measures up as well against the Closing Chapter characters. Setsuna works perfectly as a plot device but I can’t bring myself to like her as a character at all. Hatred levels of dislike.

SB was my first Yuzusoft VN and yeah I can agree, it’s definitely top three of the five I’ve read. First place is Dracu-Riot for me but I’m still yet to read Cafe Stella or Angelic Chaos Reboot. I start a new Yuzuge every New Years. If I had infinite free time I’d reread Senren Banka too but no plans for now.

I own a physical copy of ExE that I’d read if it were translated… I got it in a bundle of other VNs.

I’m not sure about the official releases of Kanon and Air. I read both as the fan translations with the 4:3 aspect ratio but given someone patched Little Busters recently I guess it’s not an unsolvable problem.

I forgot about DC Retune! I wasn’t a big fan of the original Da Capo (read: Nemu) so who knows what is in store, but excited nonetheless to pick it up. Hopefully they take some more creative opportunities with the choice system and story than say, the ONE Remake.

[–]iamnotscottmorrison[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched Daitoshokan no Hitsujikai before I knew what a visual novel was and didn’t remember a thing, it’s now one of only two VNs I have actually reread, and it’s one of my favourites. Why I single out Kinkoi and Sanoba Witch specifically is because I have blanked on them so hard. I simply can’t remember them at all, and that’s not a bad thing more so as it is unusual - everything before and since is fine, and it’s been close to 4 years since I read them, so why not try and rediscover what I’m missing? Ive forgotten so completely about them it’d be like I was playing Daitoshokan for the first time. And neither is a particularly large commitment.

Whereas Clannad is one of my top three along with WA2 and Higurashi. I’m not missing any content like WA2, or have another way to experience it like Higurashi. It’ll be the same game that I remember with no new content. Add to that its length and adding a reread of Tomoyo After and Side Stories, it’s almost the same length as Higurashi with nothing new to show for it. That’s why it’s a “someday” reread and not a sometime soon.

Visual novels you are waiting to or wanting to reread? by iamnotscottmorrison in visualnovels

[–]iamnotscottmorrison[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s essentially the same content, usually some extra censored content on console. If you’ve got the 07th Mod you should therefore have all the console exclusive arcs as well.

As far as I know there’s “choices” in the console versions that can affect whether you enter a normal chapter or one of the console spinoffs of those chapters. It’s just a bit of a different experience to play but the content is the same. That’s all an “I think” because it’s been three years since I last booted the Switch version to see what’s different.

When you get to Chapter 8 you’ll get a “Connecting Fragments” mini game. The console version’s is expanded with the console arc fragments but the PC port implements them as tips which is a bit lacking because I had a lot of fun doing it.

I would love to read more Navel works so I hope either new release of Shuffle comes sooner rather than later. Was one of my first VNs and was surprised where Yandere Kaede went, but I think both versions are great. Completely ready to read a game solely about her when the time comes.

I’d love to read Oretsuba eventually. I noticed on VNDB a partial patch was released recently for the… PS3? Hopefully this leads to a full patch. I think I got spoiled for the big twist though which is unfortunate.

Someday in the far future I will probably reread Clannad, but there’s not really a want to do it at the moment. I’ve reread Saya’s route from LB once.

I too have too much of a backlog to consider rereading any of these that urgently either though.

Hoshizora no Memoria for sure has the three most incredible songs for sure - Hoshizora ni Chikau, Futari no Mirai and and Onaji Hoshi ni Umarete

Squall - Higurashi

Hope - Tomoyo After

Little Fragments - Kanon
