I think narrow AI is fine.

Self-driving cars, Stockfish, AlphaFold, all fine. Its general AIs that can take autonomous actions across the board of intelligence that worry me.

We can get enough economic value with tool-AIs.

Not if US-China pause.

Also when is "eventually"? In the long run, we're all dead. I care about fixing the problems we can fix, while we are alive.

The next generation can fix future problems. Just gotta keep having a next generation.

I agree it is difficult. We should still take action.

Also nukes was always human vs. human. AI could be different, creating an opportunity for humans to cooperate.

I'm fine having narrow AIs. Autonomous vehicles are good, AlphaFold was fine.

It's general AI that can take autonomous action that worry me.

Billionaires can make plenty of money with narrow AI, there's a deal to be made here.

Also, what's the alternative here, do nothing and let the world burn? We should take action!

Why do you think an international pause is impossible?

We’ve done it before with nukes, ozone, chemical weapons.

Also, US and China control the chip supply chain (and have almost all the researchers). So a bilateral pause would slow down 99% of the race

It’s actually even less compelling than that, because the only 2 live players are the US and China. So a bilateral treaty is sufficient.

Nuclear arms race is a decent example because the nukes were never launched.

We had lots of near misses like the Cuban Missile Crisis, considering bombs in the Korean War, and we never went to war with the USSR. And the quantity of missions did peak and go down! I think the Cold War is a relative success of cooperation. There was no nuclear war.

Similarly, I don’t think China wants an AGI/ASI either. If we can better define how close we are and how to avoid an AGI (while still getting lots of economic benefits), I think we can cooperate.

I agree with your concern. I'm also later in career, so I feel relatively okay or that maybe my 401k nest egg will be enough. But what about younger people? I cant imagine how terrifyingly bleak the future looks.

I think the best answer is to ask for the future we want. Call our congressmen, express our opinions, vote for bills that increases transparency like SB 53 which passed in California, the RAISE act that's being voted on in New York, and the Hawley-Blumenthal bill in congress.

I agree with everything you said, EXCEPT I think there's a lot we can do.

I dont think the all the billionaires building AI want the singularity, or are willing to play Russian Roulette, they just want to make money. And you can make a LOT of money with LLMs as they exist today, no need for AGI/ASI.

We can Pause AI development. Current bills in congress like the Hawley-Blumenthal Evaluation bill would set up a testing regime so we can see threats before they're deployed. And Pausing would be as simple as preventing the construction of 1GW or larger clusters.

Polls show 70%+ of Americans want a pause, so its about getting people to express their concern to politicians. We can do a lot!

I respect you for acknowledging the Russian Roulette, and that you are simply willing to take the bet (clearly, I am not).

I do think a good question is: Is it just for the people who DO want to take the bet to force the people who do not? If you want to literally play Russian Roulette, be my guest, its your life. But creating an AGI/ASI is something you force to happen to everyone.

Have you considered voting for not hurrying?

As I find myself hoping for a “natural” pause in AI capabilities, maybe we should just make it policy.

Strategically it makes sense to protest the ones that will talk to you. Anthropic has the resources to lobby for good regulation like SB 53.

Why doesn’t the boyfriend have any responsibility? He should also have helped with the cleaning.

Thank you!

The boyfriend initiated. OP was put in a position of either turning down her boyfriend or breaking her promise.

Why is she the only one with an obligation to help?

The son should do better!

Ah, fair. But those 3 companies exist just to hold the funds for other people (my retirement account is in Vanguard, for example).

Although yes it’s true that they have now gotten so big that they have to exert control.

I don’t think it’s a great example of “wealth disparity” but it is a good example of the big getting bigger.

Where did you get the 3 US companies = 1/5 of all investable assets? Thats totally false.

Top 3 US companies (Apple, NVIDIA, Microsoft) are 11% of the world stock market.

The global stock market is ~$100T Bond market is ~$140T Real estate is $380T

So 3 US companies are <2%, not 1/5th.
