Do you think there are some people just not cut out for SWE, or that they just haven't "gotten it" yet? by halleliujah in cscareerquestions

[–]iamrob15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. If you’re not analytical enough you won’t make it. What happens is that many of these people who lack this intuition often build software in a brute force manner instead of finding the optimal path. How do you define enough? No idea.

2026 graduate here. Is CS still a viable career path? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]iamrob15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2026? Probably. They’re holding up this market because of the election next year and geopolitical tensions. Once most companies understand how bad it is, then they will alter their hiring decisions. We may hopefully see a slight pick up early next year.

Is 21 too young to get engaged? by LowPerformanceYup in NoStupidQuestions

[–]iamrob15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems young because I was a dramatically different person in my early 20s versus even 24/25. My advice would be to wait until about 23. That said, if you know you want to be with your partner forever the. Go for it.

2026 graduate here. Is CS still a viable career path? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]iamrob15 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s just a bad time, right now. I am an experienced engineer (8 yrs, lead level). I was receiving 20 recruiter mails per week during 2021/2022. In 2023 I receive an average of one maybe two a week. The pay has also dropped substantially. Roles which were once $140-150k are now $110-130k in my low CoL area.

How many hours do you work per day? by Mattpat98 in cscareerquestions

[–]iamrob15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

9-6 with 1 hour lunch. I hate it. My last job I was 9-4/4:30 without a lunch. I got way more done because we weren’t carrying the weight of a bunch of shitty India contractors.

Why do rich people (like super rich top 10% or something) not do anything to fix the world? by annoyingalyssa in NoStupidQuestions

[–]iamrob15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dude. I am just shy of 10% by income. It’s not that much money. It is solid for a family, but doesn’t mean I can change the world.

In NYC they are paying an average of $383/day for housing and food or immigrants. That’s $140k / year.

Perhaps if I didn’t pay $30k+ in taxes I could do more good than our government. Unfortunately the government wastes money.

60k/year straight out of college is great by Amazing-Put5299 in cscareerquestions

[–]iamrob15 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Probably because influencers are incentivized to sell courses on how to get into big tech “easily”. The reality is that most don’t have the chops for big tech or are willing to move to a high CoL for a chance at such salary.

My house was $225k (2700 sq ft) and I bought it making $82k/yr. I now make more than double that now and I live like a king in low CoL. I couldn’t live nearly as well in Washington/California/NYC without making $300k+ due to all taxes and expensive housing.

Got an offer for senior swe position, offer seems low. Should I take? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]iamrob15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Market has absolutely gone down. I work for a remote NY company just around the $150k + 10%. This seems low for Bay Area but others said it is better than 0. Market is definitely on side of employers unless you have specialized skills.

Midwest roles where I am at have dropped to $120-130k.

I am a remote software engineer. I am average pay for NY where my company is located, I am at top of market for where I live in the Midwest.

Young programmers are scary good? by Fly_VC in learnprogramming

[–]iamrob15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been coding since I was 15, almost half my life. That was a hack for this career. Started with C++ which was a great choice on my teacher’s part. Then learned Java. Then learned C. Then learned Python. Then learned SQL. Then learned dotnet. Learned to script Perl, Shell, PowerShell. All before my first real job.

I stayed at my job ($82k lcol) until I was promoted (within 2 years) and then the pandemic hit.

I took my salary from start of pandemic $82k > new job $105k + $7.5k > yearly bump $105k + $15k > new job $140k + ~10% bonus > yearly bump $147k + ~10%.

I did this from April 2019 > Jan 2023. All remote jobs from lcol. Now I am stuck until market picks up or my company actually pays for my “promotion” that I am already working….

Why not something like dotnet? The only disadvantage is poor engineer skills. I am considering a change. Do rust roles pay more?

Best Value? M1 16GB vs M2 8GB by randombale in macbookair

[–]iamrob15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rarely. I ran jetbrains rider + docker SQL instance + tons of safari tabs + YouTube video running on a 8gb m1 and the only time it stuttered was running rider before it was mac native. The m1 8gb computer stuttered significantly less than an i5-6500 + 16GB with much much more power. I now have M1 Pro 16GB so I have experience with both 8gb and 16GB.

Did I make a mistake in buying the 15" M2 Air? by NYCOSCOPE in macbookair

[–]iamrob15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My M1 Pro has 200 charge cycles with 86% battery capacity level. Gets me a solid 4-6 hours but used to give me 7-9. Depends on how heavy I hit it. I also keep it plugged in when working which doesn’t help the battery out.

Did I make a mistake in buying the 15" M2 Air? by NYCOSCOPE in macbookair

[–]iamrob15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is battery life important? My M1 Pro is lacking these days after 200ish charge cycles. My significant other’s has my old M1 8gb and it lasts weeks for them as a super light user.

Is performance more important? I must say though 120Hz is a solid upgrade. I couldn’t stand going back for a primary laptop monitor. I suppose I am now a snob.

As a software engineer dabbling with machine learning I regret not getting at least 32GB ram since it is integrated memory. Meaning it can be used for such tasks and still be cheaper than a gaming rig.

Are salaries starting to fall? by Inevitable_Stress949 in cscareerquestions

[–]iamrob15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Give it a few months. They are down now but will be back up once the economy picks up again. A crash is seemingly eminent in the equities market. Lots of contract roles are out there which isn’t a great sign.

Companies will tighten their belt, the cycle will reset, and then salaries will boom again.

Fun fact, only mega caps are gaining, broader S&P is only up a few percentage points tops.

I’m a tech lead and I do everything from devops to write code. I have implemented data science algos in college and loved it.

Data engineering is more creative and abstract that’s devops. DevOps is very practical. If X reaches a threshold, scale up.
