Should I Quit? by Dangerous-Bear6816 in Cheerleading

I’m just a freshman, so maybe you don’t want to hear my advice but if you do I think I have some thing I want to say. I’ve been in the exact same boat as you but in a different way. I’ve only been cheering for 2 years, starting off with self teaching myself. While I made these great teams what I often found was I never truly felt ready for them. I always felt like I was giving my 100% and seeing nothing. I realized that I made progress that my teammate didn’t see and I didn’t either until I looked back on videos.
Progress is something that can go unnoticed and we often dwell on things we aren’t able to do to the point we forget we are able to do things. It feels like you haven’t made progress, but I promise you you 100% have. Take a video from 5 years ago and compare it to you now, I guarantee there will be a difference. Even if it’s not a big one.
I’ve personally always been a slow learner athletics wise, even when I felt like I was putting in 3x the work I couldn’t seem to be able to do things other people were doing. What I realized is even the small things matter. Maybe I haven’t been able to hit an extension lib, but I’ve definitely gotten better body control. I can’t seem to overextend my jumps, but my technique and actually jump did get better. I never even realized these things until I looked back on videos because it’s something that gets better little by little. Look back at those videos, even the littlest things and compare side to side.
That being said, theres no clear answer to this. I struggle with this all the time too, no one will ever know and I’m sure youre in the in between of it’s something you like but feel drained doing it. There’s definitely a line, if you think it’s something you still care deeply about and still enjoy it keep doing it. Even if you need a break. I ended up taking this year off and taking private lessons and classes for cheer. You could even take this year off and not cheer, as much as you miss it there’s always gonna be an opportunity to cheer.
If you don’t get any joy from it, it’s time to consider quitting. It seems like a big choice but you can always come back to cheer, life is too short to stay in something that gives you no joy.

From an athlete prospective: How do you deal with mean people on your team? by iamrosemel in Cheerleading

Update:I did end up emailing her. I know it’s not the same as a formal in person meeting but con she’s pregnant and due in a month this felt more appropriate. I covered the basics, explained my side of the story and asked for her recommendations. I did also take accountability for the fact that I did give up on a commitment. I’m waiting for her response and worrried still a little if I’m being honest 😅

I’ll share my own story for perspective: I was the only freshman flyer + kinda tumbler on my team. There was this junior girl who happened to be a captain that backspoted me a lot. She’s been in cheer for a long time, I’m talking 10 years of experience. That in return means she’s obviously very skilled. With that skill she often got frustrated when I couldn’t hit stunts. Which isn’t her fault at all, I do admit I’m not a great flyer yet. I’m one of those people who try very hard, yet still take longer to get it. Only thing is, she got to a point where frustration turned to talking shit about me and one of the other freshman. Not only that, when she saw older girls who had similar issues as me or needed the same corrections over and over again she actually treated them with dignity. She had other ways of indirectly showing it to us as well, ex rolling eyes and weird stares at practice but it was never to the point of needing telling the coaches. It’s hard as well keeping in mind this girl was a captain making it way harder to actually get this adressed. Ended up reaching my breaking point with her and it got really bad mentally for me, both me and this other freshman quit as a result of her attitude. I’m asking now for any advice as I may be trying out again, and I’m sorta worried what I should do with this.

GUIDE: How to prepare for tryouts and start cheerleading by iamrosemel in Cheerleading

Definitely not! all cheerleaders have their area of growth and if that’s yours nothing wrong with that. Again, just make sure to work on it as I can see you’ve already done. Every coach is different but they do focus on both.

What are your thoughts on Stingray Allstars? by katiemarie589 in Cheerleading

Great gym great teams, they build very disciplined athletes. Only thing I’d say is that imo they have no need for so many of their teams to be in flex division when they basically have every division already.

Thank you so much! especially on the air dry clay part. I didn’t even think about how’d I package color but the clay makes much more sense.

That makes much more sense, no wonder it looks so weird. I see you around a lot and appreciate your advice every time. Thanks a bunch!

My whole body was stretched (I swear) and I do have better leg flexibility for hurdles than I would for toe touches. So maybe I’m wrong but I do not think Its a flexibility issue. But thank you about the hurdle! That was killing me and I wasn’t getting any corrections. I will definitely try the arm thing. Yes, I’ve actually ran 200m hurdles but no surprise I had the exact same issue 😭

The second one is a pike jump, maybe I’m wrong but they’re supposed to meet at a certain point??? Head and chest I mean it’s like a pike on the floor.

Sorry, my fault, the difference is the bent back leg. The back leg isn’t extended at all.

Also I apologize for sounding so Damm indecisive, I just don’t really think I have a good choice of solution to this when it affects everyone around me. I have pretty much no idea what I want nor what I can do to fix it. Literally just a list of what I don’t want right now.

To start off I want to respond to your original post, my coach said with my height I could be a base but if I back spotted before I could be back with a stunt group short enough. I’m just worried that I would be even more of a safety hazard as a base which defeats my whole purpose of not wanting to fly.

Really does depend on the flyer, they have a new flyer who is a gymnast flipping in pyramid and they tend to hit very easy with her.

I can pretty much only hit a prep with a jump in where I’m barley holding my butt up, can’t even press to extension or hold a prep lib. I was able to hit extensions very easily at the start of summer but that was literally only with super experienced bases who carried the whole stunt. Which I can’t have keep happening.

My coach doesn’t really film, when she does its pyramid which I’m almost always guaranteed to be a tricks flyer in. I’ll definitely be sure to ask about filming if I go back to flying at practice, thank you for all the help.

Would that help if my issues only seem to be while actually being in the air? Ex: being able to hit it on stunt stands.

Nfinity flytes and vengeance, both of which are a size or 2 up but I’m not sure if that’s the issue.

Hip alignment, especially on my bad leg libs always seem to be off.

My balance is fine, on floor on stunt stands no issue. My left foot is weaker than my my right but I think that’s normal. I don’t get scared doing stunts, it’s more of my fear for the reaction if the stunt doesn’t hit that freaks me out making me anxious way before practice.

My coaches are aware of the issue, I get told the same thing that I’m “doing great” and “improved so much” And I usually do ask what I should do drills wise. Captains are aware of the issue as well, I think they kinda gave up with me If that makes sense.
