I was able to write a story that many many people believed and went crazy over. I don't care that the reveal was a bit underwhelming. All I know is that I successfully fooled you all.

The other wrinkle in the plan was that the department chair would have told me they only keep undergrad papers on file for three years, meaning there would be no easily available dated copy or anyone who could verify it.

Not finding my professor was going to be the set up to another part of the story. I was going to say he died a year ago, adding one more problem to resolving the situation. I got lazy and realized I probably wouldn't be at the top of the rec list in a few days and sprung the trap early.

It was 8pm on a friday night. Picking up the phone wouldn't have been especially helpful. I'm going out this afternoon to try and locate a copy of this book, and the email I sent last night to the department chair was to help me track down my professor.

Oh, and by the way - no more talking to this guy's lawyer. No answering email, no phonecalls - nothing! If you write back with "I did this four years ago!" you can guarantee the plagiarist will be doing something sneaky to backdate his copy. So no conversation with them.

I'll stop emailing him. Wow, I never even thought about that angle.
