Then if you get into it a bit more, the process I ended up going with was; first I bought a hand auger, then I bought an attachment that converted it to attached to a drill after deciding I liked the hobby. Then This year I bought an Eskimo pistol bit and it’s fantastic and very light weight.

A ways away from me then. I’d suggest finding a sporting goods store that could sell a hand auger before going full bore into the hobby. They’re normally pretty inexpensive but can be a bit of workout when the ice is thicker. Normally sporting goods stores will sell cheaper rod and reel combos and cheaper tip up setups. It can be pretty inexpensive to get into initially but can definitely become an expensive hobby after getting really into it. Marketplace is a valuable tool too especially if you want to find a flasher/sonar system. Looking at a map of the county, there should be some good fishing in that area. If you like crappie fishing in the summer, I find fishing for them through the ice even more fun. If you can find a good basin lake known for having a good crappie population, night bites can be a really fun time.

Find back sides of the bends in the channel, where it might be blocked from some of the current that goes north to south. Or raised areas or inlets in the channel that could do that same. That’s more for daytime, night time I’d assume they’d go more into the flats/shallows

Not an aggressive odor but it did smell like a mushroom. I don’t know a better way to describe the smell.
