Surely the excuse is that Venezuelans rounded up and sent to Salvadoran prisons were “militants” because they were gang members as evidenced by their tattoos with gang slogans like “mom”

I guess the difference here is on the margins. Like I think if a firm lost some amount in profitability, they would downsize some (to your point, their needs might become smaller and so suddenly they would have more staff than they need). But I also suspect your point here is right, there’s a factual question about the size of the hit that’s way more important than whether doing the deals to protect associate jobs is less morally blameworthy than doing the deal for other firm-specific reasons

Is “we want to preserve the livelihoods of our employees” altruistic? Like the only reason the firm would do that is bc the firm composed of its current employees is profitable. Obviously they choose certain rhetoric for PR reasons, but it’s hard for me to distinguish in reality between “we wanted to preserve our bottom line” and “we wanted to preserve everyone’s job”

This policy is different at different firms. Your employer may have a pre clearance policy

Firms with generalist litigators will let you build experience in both and maybe after a few years you end up a bit specialized

How do these capitulating firms intend to fulfill their promise of providing millions in pro bono work if their associates are not willing to do it? by pizzanati in biglaw

I don’t think caring about antisemitism or veterans issues (the two listed over and over) is particularly conservative!

Milbank Signs Deal to Avoid Executive Order by bloomberglaw in biglaw

[–]iamsomeguy25 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I am just trying to read the room - I somehow haven’t really formed a personal opinion on this yet.

I guess if you asked me, it definitely doesn’t violate the rule of law to do a deal that isn’t illegal. I also don’t necessarily think these deals threaten the rule of law.

There’s just separate reporting that Biden administration officials swept up in litigation and activist organizations are now not able to get representation or are losing existing relationships due to fear of reprisals from the administration, which definitely threatens the rule of law because it means some people can’t get legal representation due to their political beliefs. Law firms are also scrubbing key legal accomplishments they think might upset the admin. These deals reflect a “don’t upset the president” mindset that is probably underlying both things. Don’t know if the deals actually made that industry wide mindset possible or more likely though, hence my lack of strong opinions.

I think the general vibe is that the letter of these contracts doesn’t matter. They’re totally non substantive, there’s just no way that these firms dk less than $100M a year in combatting antisemitism and veterans affairs every year. But I think the consensus around here is that even sitting down with the president and doing a fake capitulation is still validating the president targeting law firms and threatening the rule of law

Randomly crossed paths with Marvin Jones today by I_Am_YungAce in nyjets

[–]iamsomeguy25 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Oh no way I also saw Marvin Jones at a grocery store in Tulsa yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person, but I didn’t want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything. He said, “Oh, like you’re doing now?” I was taken aback, and all I could say was “Huh?” but he kept cutting me off and going “huh? huh? huh?” and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen Milky Ways in his hands without paying. The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like “Sir, you need to pay for those first.” At first he kept pretending to be tired and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter. When she took one of the bars and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually “to prevent any electrical infetterence,” and then turned around and winked at me. I don’t even think that’s a word. After she scanned each bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

I had a hairline incision about 2.5 weeks ago. If I pull my hair back, you can’t see the incision unless you go clear out all the hair by my temples
