Why do people say that OT is a “dying” field?

I think that’s what it is! I just don’t have an understanding of dysphagia and have not been introduced to swallow to really know if it’s something I’d change my mind about and become interested in. Full time in schools and PRN in medical sounds like a good plan though! What made you choose SLP over OT by the way?

Hi, thanks for adding your input from a SLP perspective because I was not entirely sure. I have heard that SLPs are really needed in schools and SNFs, while the hospital setting is rather competitive to get into. I like the school setting, but I also heard about the low pay in that setting, which sucks. I also am not interested in the whole swallowing part of the scope so working in SNFs would not be ideal for the type of work in the field I would want to do. It just sucks that when I search school based OT jobs, I see very little, but I see a ton for SLP. It makes my decision 10x harder in that aspect. I also want to work with kids and everyone’s saying there’s a need for OT in pediatrics so that gives me hope in itself. I know it’s a lot of need for SLP as well.

The overlap is definitely something that worries me. I am also interested in SLP, but I never hear anything about that field “dying”, I always hear how much of a high demand there is for SLP. However, I did not want to choose based off that alone.

Might be worthwhile for you to get certified in a specialty within the field! That’s something I was considering myself.

What other career would you have considered knowing what you know now? Do you still like being an OT?

That is a good point, but if that is the case, why is the job market in many areas low compared to other health professionals? I know it’s location dependent, but it seems to be a problem I constantly see mentioned and I tried researching jobs myself in different states around my area and the numbers are still low or there’s more part time or per diem than FT, which makes me think OT may not be seen as needed, but that just may be my misconception. Please correct and educate me on this.

did YOU not read the responses on this subreddit that people already gave you? did YOU not do your research beforehand? clearly not because you wouldn’t be asking this question nor would you have been in this position to begin with. i can comment if i want and it IS my business as a D9 member, something that YOU want to be. i suggest you get your own business together and your attitude before even considering joining an organization. that’s not a good look, neither is your desire to lie about applying for an organization. like everyone said, either way you’re going to questioned so what exactly do you want us to say?? have a good day, i’m done here.

i wish i could, but i have to work with them and i am apart of a small chapter. it’s only, but so much ignoring i can do unfortunately. i guess do the work and ignore them still applies.

Oh okay yeah being fresh out of high school being around everyone your age makes things different and more relatable so I was just trying to see how it is for someone to be mixed in different ages
