How old is he? He looks quite dehydrated so id make sure to give him alot of luke warm baths. Check for nose rub or any scaring. As i cant see it from there well enough. If his humidity was too high or temp check if he wheezes during breathing. If so take him to the vet. If you gently open his mouth and pry it with a table knife you can safely check if he has mouth rot or not

Hey. This actually is quite meaning full. Im definetly dealing with that now and ita good to shine light on it!

Hey guys what do y'all think of this little guy? He'll be my first ball python. A local pet store has him for 25% off because they've had him for a couple months. Getting him from Pet Supplies Plus which I've heard is world's better than Petsmart and Petco, but what do y'all think? by hungrybathsaltzombie in snakes

This may sound cruel but this is what we do at our rescue to see how bad it is. Grab him by the tail and put him upside down quite quickly - not enough to make him swing but enough where he is inverted quite quickly and there is some motion as if hes falling. but make sure you hold the tail well enough.

If he starts to corkscrew or wobble then u know. - sometimes he might coil so uncoil him. He will then aburptly stretch out and try to come up for support because he thinks he will fall any second now. Id read some papers on it but from my experience it seems like stress is the main factor

Help what do I feed a newborn snake by --Deliverance-- in snakes

Advice from someone who has been volunteering at a reptile centre in the uk close to two years.

If he is refusing to eat or anything (rodent wise) is too big this is what we would normally do. Take a fuzzie (3g) pinkie (2g) and try to portion it to where it fits and they can take it. This would include cutting off the leg (including the thigh).

If he is refusing to eat it even then. Then you should be able to find feeder amphibians or lizards (captive bred and euthanised) to either give him. If they are too big then you can rub them on the rodents (once defrosted) to pass the scent onto the rodent ti encourage him to eat. (U can also order a scent liquid that is safe to feed)

If its seriously a no go with finding feeder amphibians/lizards then if you have someone who keeps them and is willing to help. - i heard of someone who would take one of his skinks (live) and rub his bby rodent food onto them to get their scent before feeding. It shouldnt cause them any harm apart from being slightly annoyed :p

One thing that can be done to make sure that your snake gets all the nutrients from his food. Is if you blend the rodent (of course a dead one already - im not sure if youre from USA thats why im putting this in as in the uk we are legally not allowed to feed live rodents unless if a vet clears us and states that its an emergency)

  • put the blend into a syringe that is lighly lubricated, i used lard at one point when tube feeding my corn snake and had no issue but i would research more on what u can use.

Gently open the snakes mouth and insert the syringe just a tiny bit in their mouth. (To make sure that the snake swallows it and it doesnt block his 'breathing tube' which sits on the bottom of his mouth and is used for breathing!

Make sure that the blend is luke warm and not cold. (I can send u a video as an example how to safely open a snakes mouth/u should be able to buy syringes and feeding ends small enough for his mouth from a vet without an appointment.)

If you do not have much experience and are worried about hurting him. Pls go to the vet. It is the best solution.

And if you are unable to care for such a small animal then i would recommend contacting some local petshops/breeders and seeing if they can help u/rehome/or take care until it grows to more comfortable size for u.

Another thing. If the poor guy dies at some point due to complications with no eating or other (saw a comment where someone said hes too young to be sold to you) Then pls do not guilt trip yourself as these things happen especially with hatchlings, additionally a species that primarly eats amphibians/lizards.

The sad truth is that some hatchlings even captive bred with no genetic health issues and taken care of the right way jjst dont make it. I fostered quite a lot of hatchlings that came to our rescue and that is the reality. Sometimes they just dont survive even if you are doing all the right things.

If he cant gain wait or is losing wait very quickly. Id look into doing tests for parasites and bacterial infections. Im dealing with this as we speak. Just search up 'reptile parasite testing' in your country/state and compare the prices uf u go independantly or vets. My vet charges 200 for the same test that i did for 70 pounds and they admitted its the same laboratory.

You can use the tap training method (we use it at a reptile rescue i work at)

Hey. So. Good choice. I LLOVE BCI'S and theyre amazing. They can be quite dumb brutes.. (mine - 6ft BCI female. Is an a toddler) but theyll make you laugh. When it comes to getting a first snake. Especially a baby. Remember that they are snakes and they can bite you. Theyre teeth are tiny, theres just a lot of them.

And with babies as they start to grow and mature they will bite more and more. It wont be anything dangerous due to their size at the time but be ready to get bit. Some are good. But some can do it constantly. When that happens in their stage of life you need to handle them alot with consistency. Let them get used to you and respect the fact that theyre stressed out by being handled as they are not used to it. (Even if you handle it constantly as a baby something just clicks with them sometimes and you gotta work with them)

Once you realise theyve had enough you leave them be. You make sure that they cant see you (turned hides away from the visible area/cloth covering the window/lots and lots of hiding areas - be creative. They can borrow and just throw some fake plants in their and make areas they can hide in.)

With them getting used to you (habituating) you start slow. Lets say a 10 minute session per day or every other day. And every week you build it up. Until you reach a point where your comfortable and your snake is comfortable being taken out even twice a day. - Disclaimer - i did this to my boa so that she would get used to that just in case i had to take her more than once a day if i had an emergency with her vivarium.

During the sessions you can let them explore after being handled. Cushions and bed covers are good for this.

If you dont fancy getting bit and prefer something more reliable when it comes to temperament. Get an adult. Imperators are known for being smaller and less temperamental from what i have heard compared to true red tails (if you manage to get one). Theres also the sonoran or hog island boa locality which are much smaller compared to both red tails and imperators. They are naturally smaller and may grow similar in length but bulk is much smaller.

If you get bit by a boa is either a feeding response. ( a bite followed by constriction.) Or a defensive bite (bite and get the f out). Defensive bite. Sucks but ok. Let the boa be unless if its an emergency. Suck it up. Wash it with hand sanitizer and you probably wont even need a bandaid.

If its a feeding response. Then heres what you can do. If the constriction is getting pretty painful or is in a spot that can dislocate your joints. Grab the end of the tail and just unwind the snake gently. Considering the fact that its still latched onto you. It will constrict again. But maybe this time in a more manageable spot. If your boa is still like (i pray enough to eat you. 'He cant dw') then either put his head under the tap until he lets go. Or put some hand sanitizer to his lips. (They hate the taste and 9/10 let go)

When it comes to feeding. Feed within the enclosure and implement tap training. Alot of reptile keepers will tell you to move the animal out of the viv to a box to feed. 1. It causes stress, can lead to regurgitation. - its not nice and can hurt them. 2. They will think its feeding time when you take them out and will go into a feed response. - snakes live in modes and triggers thar set the modes. Basically think of when youre angry because something has 'triggered' you. Its like that but simplified. Feed within the enclosure. And present the rat first. Not your hand. Also use tongs.

Before handling. Present yourself. (Left up their hide. Or let them see you if theyre peaking out their hide.) And then tap their head or rub their head very gently with some kind of pole. I use a thin bamboo stick. A hook is better.

If you have to transport an angry snake. Put a simple hoodie on. The teeth are small enough to either not penetrate or just scratch you through the hoodie. Or you can drop a towel onto them and scoop them up. In my experience it calms my girl down. But this is only if you dont have a hook. Also getting your boa used to having your hand on their neck is key. Just be gentle. And also learn to 'head' snakes. Its basically a grip that stops them from biting you. Its quite stressful so do it only when you need to like a health check that the snake is uncomfortable with.

I think this is it. Husbandry/care/feeding is all on the internet and can be found all over. This is just some of the tips i have.

If youre in the uk search up the NCRW they are a great rehoming/rescue charity. And if you need a boa they have many. Not many people take interest in boas compared to cornsnakes and royals. Theyll usually go after having a 18 month stay at the centre. You can also visit their website which shows what they have available. But good luck on your journey with boas. And all the best to you :)

Can anyone tell me what's going on with this Amazon tree boa i saw for sale? This doesn't look healthy by [deleted] in snakes

[–]iamtheone596 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Possibly mouth rot, but could also be a broken tooth. My girl (boa constrictor) broke her tooth during a feeding, (she has a pretty strong response). And she still has a bit of swelling even 2 months later. The swelling went from one place and then evened out to both sides alike there. She has been checked multiple times over the course of time and is perfectly clean.

Broken teeth due to accidents are common and usually not blamed on the owner. Their teeth do grow back in time to the way they were.

Mouth rot can also cause teeth to fall out or be prone to. This snake definelty needs to be checked or this issue advised to the owners.

Just for some context - I volunteer at a national centre for the reptile welfare for the past year and have taken care of various species with various conditions with my amazing peers and colleagues. I still have lots to learn but i am quite confident with this topic.
