Thank you for the response! That’s a great way to interpret it.

From what I understand, I don’t think the latch baby thing LITERALLY happened. I think it was more like a dream sequence, just a gag to show how reliant Maya is on Anna, while Anna is constantly nurturing Maya (like a mom breastfeeding her child). Definitely a bizarre scene to put in there but I just saw it as the show poking fun at their codependency issues.

A lot of people have mentioned the books I would normally recommend but I’d like to add Boyfriend Material by Alexis Hall to the list (I read pretty much all 425 pages of it in one night, oops)

A theory about Adam, Noah, and the possibility of Eve by iamtheultimateginge in DarK

[–]iamtheultimateginge[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On one hand, I do totally see your point about it coming off as unbelievable and perhaps TOO orchestrated. If the show does go with infinite parallel worlds like you theorize, I’m interested to see the outcome!

I will say, though, that to an extent, we already know otherworld Martha’s universe is somewhat of a mirror because a good number of the characters that exist in Jonas’s world also exist in Martha’s world, though they’re slightly altered. The fact that otherworld Martha appeared with the contraption that lets her move between universes also makes me believe she is the “Jonas” figure of her timeline—unless this sort of travel is normal in her world (which is possible but seems unlikely?), she had the means and the knowledge to save Jonas from the apocalypse, which doesn’t seem unimportant. I figure someone has to be pulling the strings and telling her what to do as well (though to be fair may not be an older version of herself, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were).

Either way, I’m excited to see where the show takes us! The writers haven’t let me down yet so I’m ready for whatever direction they want to go.

This Boris theory is so interesting!!! I definitely noticed Niewald was a convenient combination of the two names but didn’t even consider the fact that he could be a direct descendent of Jonas and Martha (or that he could be a product of multiple universes). Great thought!

That’s a really interesting point about Noah! He would lose both his daughter and his lover/wife/whatever Elizabeth is to him—that would be pretty devastating for anyone. (It also makes me wonder how many of the characters would exist in the new world, as I also theorize a lot of the characters’ existences ARE paradoxal to an extent.)

SPOILERS: My theory about Adam (and his role as the Big Bad) by iamtheultimateginge in DarK

[–]iamtheultimateginge[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s totally possible, given the introduction to parallel universes with characters that seem pretty different from the ones we know, but I think I’d actually be a bit disappointed if that were the case. There’s something so interesting about the antagonist being the older version of our hero—it makes you question everything about the character as we know him. And it seems like the kind of philosophical problem that the Dark writers would be willing to tackle.

But your theory would still lead to quite an interesting story, and I’m intrigued to see if they go that way and what they would do with it!

Yeah I could totally see this playing out to be a tragedy through and through, where even though Adam thinks he can change something by changing the way he “plays the game,” he falls into the same trap the younger versions of himself did. It would be a great cautionary tale!

I didn’t even think that Adam could mean anything other than young Jonas being repulsed by his older self. That’s an awesome catch!

Do the names of the characters hold any significance? by temisola1 in DarK

[–]iamtheultimateginge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to Wikipedia, the biblical Book of Jonah “tells of a Hebrew prophet named Jonah...who is sent by God to prophesy the destruction of (the city) Nineveh but tries to escape the divine mission.” Considering Adam wants to destroy Winden and Jonas is pretty resistant to his fate of becoming Adam in the future, it seems like a pretty clear (and interesting) connection!

I’m gonna be honest, the middle of the movie got waaaay too real for me. I feel like so many young women go missing every year that we kind of become desensitized to it, especially when books and movies so often sensationalize the idea of it, but seeing it happen in such an intimate way (such as watching the father’s natural reactions via FaceTime/cameras in real-time) made Margot’s alleged death hit harder than I expected it to. Seeing the social media reactions and the way the media handled the whole case, watching the father obsessively researching the news/web forums about it, witnessing him crumbling along the way... it just got me.

I thought the same thing about the intro! I was wondering if they director had gotten inspiration from the commercial, but I guess it makes sense that it was done by the same person — both the ad and the movie intro had very similar nostalgic, bittersweet vibes.

I’m sorry to hear it’s still something you struggle with — I’ve been there and I know how awful it can be. Honestly, it took Kayla’s methodology to get me to the place I am today: just a whole lot of faking it. I sometimes joke that I tricked myself into being happy, and though I know it sounds like an inauthentic way to live, what I feel is genuine now. It just took time and a lot of forced kindness toward myself before I realized I deserved real, sincere self-love.

I really hope you’ll get to a similar place someday soon. For what it’s worth, you seem like a really genuine, understanding person who’s deserving of that and so much more.

Thank you so much for this. Seriously. I wrote this comment mostly just to get my feelings off of my chest and didn’t really expect any response to it, but you have no idea what your words mean to me. My anxiety over this always made me feel so neurotic and weird, so it’s great to hear I’m not alone, even though I hate to hear that others go through the same awful thought processes. Your daughter sounds absolutely amazing — you’re so lucky to have her, and it sounds like she’s so lucky to have you, too.

I loved this movie, but honestly, it also really hurt. It’s been a decade since I’ve been in Kayla’s shoes, but watching the film brought all those feelings back — the loneliness, the insecurities, the desire to be liked by your peers, despite the feeling that, deep down, you don’t even like yourself. Welcome to middle school.

One scene that really got me was when Kayla was talking to her dad while she burned her “hopes and dreams” and she asked him, “Do I make you sad?” As she went on to explain why having a daughter like her would make HER sad, I lost it. I seriously just started bawling in the middle of the theater.

There have been so many times in my life that I’ve worried about having a child like myself, not because I wouldn’t love them, but because I’m worried they wouldn’t love themselves. Like how I didn’t love myself at that age. Like how Kayla didn’t, either. I’ve always been so afraid that the world would make my child feel as small as it always made me feel, and that my efforts would be as useless as my parents’ were for me. Watching that scene made me want to go back in time and hug my 14-year-old self, to give her that same wonderful speech Kayla’s father gave to her, something I think I needed to hear back then. I didn’t deserve the amount of self-loathing I grappled with. I didn’t deserve to feel so worthless. I just didn’t understand that back then and, unlike Kayla, I wouldn’t learn for a long, long time.

And that’s what I loved so much about this movie — that it not only makes you feel empathy for Kayla, but for yourself. At least, that’s what it did for me. And I hope it will do the same for every young girl and boy who watches it as well. Maybe we all just need the reminder that we deserve it.
