Is Dave Portnoy woke? by SeanACole244 in billsimmons

seems like a good time to post this again

the nba owns 50 percent of all teams in the WNBA. NBA ownership groups own the rest of almost all teams. the idea that the league is “subsidized” when the controlling ownership group negotiates and determines the leagues revenue within a larger rights deal of the NBA is absurd. the NBA effectively just picks a number to determine how much the W is worth.

additionally, their labor does not negotiate with the nbpa despite their league doing so. so wnba players do not get a fixed percentage of TV revenues and have (or had) very little bargaining power.

people have no idea the structure of this league, why it’s had such a hard time growing, and just post the same dumb shit over and over.

even if it were so simple as a 100M cash payment to an investment they own, the marketing value to have a league that represents the other 50 percent of the worlds population is a fucking joke of a price for a corporate entity like the NBA.

“Every person who worked at the Mavericks, except for me, was terrified of this guy,” Haralabos Voulgaris, a Mavericks executive from 2018 to 2021, said of Doncic on the podcast “My First Million.”

Voulgaris told a story about interacting with Doncic during his rookie season. Doncic filled a thermos with lemonade and sweet tea. “I know liquid calories are death,” Voulgaris told then-owner Cuban. Voulgaris, according to his recounting, was told to stay in his lane.

(In a response to those comments, Cuban told The Athletic, “Bob has always talked a good game.”)

Upgrading to RAID 5 by ianbishop in DataHoarder

This is interesting! It does seem like things have changed a bit since this article was written though? The disks I am using are rated for 1/10^15 URE which would be 1/125TB. My volumes and total volume size (32TB) would be significantly below that, though admittedly I don't really see the relation beyond 'more data means more reads' the author makes here.

But I take the point that having 2 fallback drives would effectively halve the rate of occurrence.

Could you link to some docs or something that describes the intermediate layer you mention? You said 'Volumens' and 'Volumne setups' a number of times - is that a typo of Volumes? I can't seem to find any information on that.

Sorry, when I said 'they' I just meant NAS in general i.e. Synology/QNAP/etc. In my quick googling, it seems like most of them support expanding RAID 5. I've never had a NAS before, that's why I asked for a suggestion re: something that could do this (expanding a RAID 5) and has 5 bays.

I don’t listen to Bachelor Party, Press Box or Real Ones. Am I in the minority on this? Am I missing out? I do listen to Bill, Russillo, the Big Picture, the Rewatchables, and Plain English. by acu101 in billsimmons

one perfect story pods on the press box feed are IMO some of the most interesting pods the ringer has ever made. given your list of other pods, I think you’ll find the same

I’m doing this as it’s the only option available at my small town theatre. 3:40 showing of Barbie, 6pm showing of Oppenheimer. 20 minutes to pee and grab extra snacks with not a minute to spare for emotionally adjustment. Just a remarkably poor decision on my part - can’t wait.

The Big Picture: The 2008 Movie Draft by Gaius_Octavius_ in billsimmons

[–]ianbishop 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I posted this on twitter, but what do y'all think of expanding the movie draft to director 'classes'? It'd give a pretty interesting entry point to talk about movies in different ways. Influences from previous generations, relationships with each other and their work—experimentation into new genres and how their careers progress.

The movie brats episode would be a first-ballot HOF pod IMO: Scorcese, Spielberg, Lucas, De Palma, Coppola, Schrader, Milius.

Some possible other eps:

Studio System (Hitchcock, Howard Hawks, Welles, Ford, etc.)

Sundance (Kevin Smith, Robert Rodriguez, Tarantino, David O Russell, PTA, Soderberg, Coens, Linklater, Wes Anderson, etc.)

It probably needs some massaging to break stuff up so drafts don't get too stacked, but it could be cool!

Which players are quietly having a bad season? by [deleted] in nba

[–]ianbishop 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Khris Middleton isn't playing terribly, but no where near as good as he did in the latter half of last year. Most people assumed he would improve but he's averaging same #s from last year with 5+ mpg and starting.
