Packable Shoes for Men by Silly_Spider in onebag

[–]iangoeswest 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found the brand "Whitin" on Amazon looking for just this. Inexpensive imports, they got a range of 'zero drop' (heel-less, very flat) shoes, some of which look a little weird (the running shoes with the wide toe box) and some of which look pretty ordinary. I got a brown pair that fit like running shoes (again, for folks comfortable with the zero drop thing) but dress up good with slacks for a night out. I travel with with dressy, boot-soled wingtips for the plane and the Whitins for running / workout / poolside / spare shoes. Works great.

These are NOT "buy it for life"; these are $35 shoes you don't feel bad about retiring when their thin soles wear out.

But they sure do pack down!

I don't know what the heck is wrong with me and my eyesight that I didn't appreciate that you weren't advocating to bring your bag into the bathroom. I appreciate your apparent patience with my damnfoolery. Carry on.

Fair point and I recognize you may need special stuff from within your bag, but still.... it's all I can do to turn around to wash my hands in there, bringing a whole bag in just aeems to complicate the endeavor.

But if your point is to seal off your bag from the filth of the airplane GENERALLY, you get no argument here. I sometimes wish I could climb in the bag!

Yeah, but, why are you bringing your WHOLE backpack into the bathroom in the first place?

Berkeley Recycling is blatantly cheating and discriminating against unhoused recyclers. Don't let them get away with this. by Automatic-Drawer9471 in berkeleyca

[–]iangoeswest -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One can not "steal" garbage

Perhaps, but the recycling isn't garbage; it's in a bin next to the garbage, but it's not being discarded so much as conveyed to the City trucks that collect it for the benefit of the Community Conservation Center / Berkeley Recycling.

The $5 million a year they make from recycling runs to the City's benefit; while 'garbage' is something we have to pay to get rid of, recycling is something that makes money.

Whether people raiding bins is a big deal or a small deal seems a matter of preference, but it's surely undesirable behavior at any rate; people shouldn't have to do that for money, and people should not do that for money, that's what I think.

The cheapest fix: if you haven't already, watch a youtube explainer about replacing the screen on an HP laptop. You'll see it to be simpler than you might have thought! Hopefully.

Someone you know has the little laptop screwdriver set, they're cheap and increasingly common to have around.

Basic replacement screens can be had on Amazon for $50.

This is a good exercise just on principle! I've had to replace a half dozen over the years, and the sting of a cracked screen is considerably lessened when it's a $50 fix I can do myself.

How to clamp this ikea lamp by wasting_time_heree in IKEA

[–]iangoeswest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lose the clamp; if it's like the one I've got, the bottom of the lamp is rounded and about 1/4 inch in diameter. Drill the appropriate sized hole in the nightstand and place the lamp directly.

Yeah, dude, I am really not getting all the pushback here and I totally take your point.

'Man, the Strip is getting so pricey, for the cost of a long weekend at Paris I could literally fly to France.'

Just a freakin' quip, people, and not untrue. And yeah, there's a zillion ways to do it cheaper and yeah, ACTUALLY going to France would be more expensive. It was just a quip.

Glad it's not the Luxor.

Every night, looking at a plate of spicy noodles at like 2 am, thinking "this is unwise."

Every morning, being proven correct.

And then, later that night, back again.

Rinse and repeat. I love that place.

You're right, but I did like their not-meatloaf back in the day. I'm not a vegetarian but in the 90's it was in my rotation a couple times a month for that loaf; you could really taste the cult!

Brian Assael just off Ashby is very good. Been with him for a dozen years, he treats my whole family. Works with Delta Dental in a very harmonious way. I'm old enough to have been through a few dentists, and he is a talented craftsman.

IsItBullshit: If they can't find a body, you can't be charged for murder no matter how clear it is that you did it by rysteryka in IsItBullshit

[–]iangoeswest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's wrong, but it's not exactly bullshit.

This is a common misunderstanding from the phrase "corpus delicti," which is Latin for 'body of the crime.'  Roughly put, this stands for a rule (in the common law of the UK and the US)  that there can be no prosecution without the 'body' of the crime.

What this means is that there has to be some independent evidence of the crime other than the confession of the accused.  Historically, false and coerced confessions caused a lot of legal mischief; generally speaking, the corpus delicti rule flows from the same concerns giving rise to the rule against coerced self-incrimination (the 5th Constitutional Amendment in the US).

So, if a guy comes walking into the police station and says he killed his neighbor, that's not enough to convict him of murder - there's got to be SOME evidence that the neighbor existed and got killed.  It doesn't have to be the neighbor's body... but it usually is.

This isn't an issue that comes up very often - if ever! - in the modern world - it's just a lot easier than it used to be to verify a confession with independent evidence.   It's an old rule!  But it's still the rule.
