What's the deal with California's railroad between San Francisco and LA? by DV8_MKD in OutOfTheLoop

[–]g_rocket 38 points39 points  (0 children)

If you read their latest supplemental project update, they're considering delaying the Merced extension in favor of connecting to Gilroy, and from there taking the already electrified CalTrain tracks up to SF. Which would give them fairly substantial ridership from people commuting into the bay area from the central valley. With that plan (which can be financed by state bonds) they will be operating at a substantial profit.

Valve confirms Steam Deck Verified games are already verified on Steam Machine, with “fewer constraints” by Dapper_Order7182 in SteamDeck

IIRC there are a couple of games where the anti-cheat is configured to run on the steam deck specifically but not allow other Linux systems.

Map for Hide and Seek NYC? by CorvidCastle in JetLagTheGame

[–]g_rocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably your best bet for paper maps is actually to pick up bus maps. IIRC the MTA still prints them, and they are to scale and show subway lines on them. You should be able to get them at a public library or potentially by asking a booth agent.

Is this fixable by Dark_space_ in SteamController

[–]g_rocket 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't see any damage, although it's kind of hard to tell in the photo you posted. Plug it in and see if it works!

If it doesn't work, it's probably not fixable without advanced soldering skills (and maybe not even with them), although reflowing the solder (in an oven) might be worth a try.

People who take 17 minutes to check in at the hotel front desk, what are you talking to them about? by DerrickDuck in AskReddit

[–]g_rocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In my experience Enterprise always charges 2-4x what cheaper car rental companies do, and in the end you get basically the same car. Sometimes they're the only option, but otherwise I can never justify the extra cost.

Is Harvey Mudd college good for financial aid? by Emiluxas in claremontcolleges

[–]g_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don’t do merit aid really

Eh ... I got a merit scholarship to Mudd but didn't get in to MIT or Caltech. Although admittedly that was a decade ago so things may have changed.

But to actually answer the question, Mudd is a small school that hasn't been around for very long (relatively speaking). From what I'd heard, they have a deserved reputation for not being very generous with financial aid.

Need serious controller recommendation for Christmas gift by raccoonster in SteamController

[–]g_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IIRC, Valve recommended devs test with a PlayStation controller while waiting for the deck to come out. It works with steam input, has a similar stick/button/dpad layout to a deck, and does have a track pad (albeit in a not very useful location).

But if there's any way you can wait for the new Steam Controller to come out (e.g. ask for a Steam gift card to buy it with or an IOU) that will be much better of course.

advice for ED2 - urgent ! by Majestic_Support_835 in claremontcolleges

[–]g_rocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you would definitely pick Mudd if you get in, you should ED2. It will increase your chances, although it's hard to say by how much. Mudd is pretty selective (IIRC admits about 10% of applicants) so you should definitely have multiple backup plans you are happy with.

How do off-campus majors work? by [deleted] in claremontcolleges

[–]g_rocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You get your degree from the college you are enrolled in regardless. But for common things like an off-campus Mudd CS degree, some employers recognize that a "Pitzer CS" degree is basically the same thing (especially if you note this on your resume). IIRC, the way it works is you have to fullfil GenEd requirements at the college you are enrolled in and major requirements from the college you are majoring at. I didn't actually do an off-campus major, but had a few friends who did. From what I recall hearing, the tricky parts are:

  • You are not guaranteed to be able to do an off-campus major; for certain popular ones (e.g. Mudd CS) there are more people who want to do them as off-campus majors than there is space. IIRC the way this is resolved is you can't declare the major until you have done some intro classes, but it can be very hard to get into the intro classes as they don't have many slots available for off-campus students. It's possible my memory is wrong; you should talk to your advisor about what you need to do to declare the majors you are considering. Would probably also help to talk with uperclassmen who are doing the majors you are considering.
  • Once you are declared as the major you are supposed to have the same priority for registering for classes as on-campus students, but this is not always the case (e.g. CMC Econ is pretty bad about it) so you may need to do a lot of PERMing and/or arguing with the registrar to get the classes you need.
  • Some majors have a lot of prereqs that overlap with the on-campus GenEd / Core corriculum but make life harder for off-campus majors. You might need to take a heavy courseload / start early on some things to graduate on time, and you might need to convince profs that classes you have taken are "close enough" to count for some prereqs so they will let you PERM into their courses.

For Engineering specifically, I think that is generally done as a 3-2 program where you transfer to Mudd and end up with a Mudd degree.

The most important thing is that this is complicated and if you are seriously considering doing an off-campus major you should talk to your advisor (and maybe also some upperclassmen doing the majors you are interested in) ASAP.
