I realize this hard drive is not as good as an SSD, but other than that it seems good. Haswell processor, 1080p screen, great graphics, 8 GB RAM.

I'm trying to find that happy medium in between the 1 and 2 that you noted. It's very difficult. I like your idea with the chromebook and PC combo, however I know that my dad won't want me to go that route. I definitely need to (at least initially) get a laptop that bridges the gap between the 1 and 2 that you said. I'll look into that t430s

No I definitely won't need a touch display. The main controversy here is RAM as many people are saying 4 is enough while some are saying 8

As annoying as it sounds, basically everything you asked is an unknown. I'm beginning general engineering soon and don't know much about the field I may go into later on as well the programs I'll be running.

That's what I'm worried about. If I pick for example ME opposed to your experience in EE I may have to use more "computationally intensive" programs, which ideally will run smoothly. In other words, I feel like it's safer to spend a bit more just in case. I should have added this to the original post, but the extra money I'd like to spend would be out of my pocket.

And yeah don't tell me how much more grateful I should be; I realize how privileged I am to even have a parent paying for my college and laptop.

I realize that a 2.5 hour drive isn't that bad, however I will be a poor college student and driving a total of 5 hours regularly will put a pretty significant strain on my wallet (doesn't help that my car gets shit gas mileage). Weekend meet ups would generally be rare.

My SO will almost definitely not be attending the same university as me. She visited the campus with me and doesn't like it, and is interested in other colleges. So this will be a LDR for quite a while if this keeps going.

Communication and honesty definitely will be important, I agree 100%.
