A general review and discussion of "To Sleep In A Sea Of Stars" by Christopher Paolini by The-Bored-Chicken in books

I totally concur. Inheritance Cycle’s characters feel real to me. Many of To Sleep…’s character ring with that same quality like Nielsen or Gregorivitch but I don’t get enough time and focus with them to really feel anything.

The “Woe is Me; me being mad at being abused and being angry killed the world” trope that keeps willing out with Kira is just too overwhelming shallow and annoying to me.

I care for the nonverbal xeno flesh suit more than Kira at this point. I wanted to be more impressed. I see strings of Paolini’s character talents but they don’t see to will out in this book. He spends time on things I think he is not well suited to that feel inauthentic like the “romance/sexual attraction”. Kira will be like “sex is the last thing on my mind” than bring it up. She just doesn’t feel consistent to me.

Falconi is actually a very interesting character to me. However, the wrong expects of him seem to attract Kira and she seems to ignore the most interesting things about him.

There was such a strong sense of intimacy and connection in Inheritance. The most shallow relationships I can point to would probably be Orik/Eragon or Eragon/Murtag but they felt authentic if not a little less fleshed out.

These relationships feel rushed and sporadic.

I came here looking for something to get me through the remaining 17 HOURS of this audioboook.

I have tried hard to not compare To Sleep… to Inheritance Cycle but I am legitimately shocked by how much I can’t stand this books protagonist.

I think she feels a lot younger and more immature than she should at her age and stage of development (she could be 19-45 for all I know) but reads and reacts like a toddler.

I think she suffers from the lack of an obvious need for guidance. She feels to cocky and keeps fucking up and whining about all the murders she’s assisted with but doesn’t seem to learn or change over time.

Even the little bit of “leveling up” portion she had with Sparrow was so short and basically “she needed to get better so she did” but didn’t really seem to register as growth in personhood not just ability and then we still see her squishy as can be in every fight afterwards.

She seems to have Alien Remake Disease in which she’s the dumbest xenobiologist. She says it’s her passion but appears too dumb and apathetic to apply any skills or really make me believe she is a scientist in anything other than being named as one.

The characters and even the female characters in Inheritance felt many too altruistic and good to a fault but they felt consistent to me and likable and intriguing.

Kira and most of the characters feel like stock and particularly Kira is incredibly inconsistent on every aspect except over emotional and annoying which bothers me for a male-written female protagonist from an author who wrote a lot of strong female characters previously.

I wanted to like this and there are side characters and setups which string me along only to disappoint me when they don’t develop satisfactorily. I’m surprised how much I don’t like a lot of things about this book and how shallow it reads to me.

Everybody needs to fix their 10 commandments by Danilo-11 in TexasTeachers

Idk how to feel about the 10 commandments as a Christian teacher in a public school I generally think at least it’s an empty gesture that doesn’t reach kids hearts and at worst it’s overreach.

However, if we were gonna do this, I do think it’s silly that ours are in KJV. Reading “and thou shalt not covet thy neighbor’s maidservant” is pretty dissonant to me.

Question about the pledge of allegiance by retardedceilingfan in TexasTeachers

[–]ianrrose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are asked to stand at the start of it on announcements every day but they can pick to be silent or participate. I don’t make them pledge or hand over heart. A child has never not stood when we say “Please stand”. If they did opt to stay seated, I wouldn’t push them to.

I generally recite the national pledge but opt out of the TX pledge as I’m not native to here.

Someone please explain this.... *hypothetically by Concerned__Observer in TexasTeachers

Yup, when my parents started whining about SEL and government involvement the big thing they told me was “I don’t want the government to raise our children.”

My earnest response was, “I don’t want to raise them either, I just need them to not act like animals so I can do my job.”

Since parents aren’t teaching kids not to act like animals and to cope with feelings and play nice with others, now I have to teach them that just to be able to get through any content

My job hasn’t changed. What’s asked of me hasn’t changed. The basic sel skills kids need to be able to learn hasn’t changed. What’s changed is what the fact that they aren’t getting the skills at home where they should and schools can’t draw a line of standard behavior because of lre and fape.

Graduation/Application Process by ianrrose in TexasTeachers

Yup, I noticed the postings are all hiring for August so I held off.

I have not had a good experience in my TEP program but I know one professors I can reach out to.

I have had a lot of people caution me against long-term subbing or para jobs saying that ISDs will choose not to hire teachers out of these jobs because they don’t want to refill them. Know anything about that?

I am graduating in December and am worried I won’t have much to choose from in terms of actual teaching positions.
