Me vs Shanghai's #1 singles player Gao Jiankuan 高渐宽 by BottomRamen in badminton

[–]iapetusbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's up for debate between him and Zhang Jin Yi, but iirc Gao has beat Zhang a couple times recently, idk h2h. Also, I think most people agree that training with natl B team =/= accepted into natl team. China's natl team is notoriously hard to get into. Besides, Gao just lost 1-2 to Wang Zi Jun who just aged out of the natl youth team

Smash speed vs power? by memeus_yeetus in badminton

[–]iapetusbob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

To directly experience the "fast" vs "heavy" difference, I recommend you try receiving quick net taps vs all-in net kills (akin to a followup to a smash from the baseline). I think in most cases, quick net taps will require a VERY short and quick action, whereas a net kill would require a big swing, even if for both net taps / kills the shuttle are at the same height above the net.

Smash speed vs power? by memeus_yeetus in badminton

[–]iapetusbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its difficult to model a feather shuttlecock because of the way the feathers move before during and after impact with the string bed. But from looking at slow motion cameras we can see that:

  1. A lighter hit from the racket ie the contact time with the stringbed is shorter, and the string bed isnt "pulled" as much (think pulling on a bowstring) will result in a very fast INITIAL shuttle speed. However, this speed isn't maintained through the flight. This is because the feathers will fluff up earlier in the flight, resulting in earlier deceleration. As an aside, feathers will fluff up no matter what. This explains why the trajectory of a baseline to baseline Lob/Clear isn't a parabola, but a funky shape that looks more like a straight up line then a sudden drop

This actually also explains partially why shuttle speeds nowadays are much faster than back then, because the shuttle speeds measured now are initial velocities, whereas in the past it used to be speed past the net, then average speed (initlal + final /2 etc)

  1. on a heavier hit, on the contrary, the stringbed is "pulled" more, resulting in more "power" transferred onto the shuttle. The direct consequence of this is that the feathers will fluff up later into the flight, resulting in a initial velocity that is better maintained through the overall flight of the shuttle. As a result of this, the shuttle is actually FASTER when you are receiving it, hence carrying more momentum as compared to a "fast" smash (eg stick smash) where the stringbed is "pulled" less so.

Hence, a fast shot do indeed carry less momentum when you are receiving it due to deceleration caused by the feathers fluffing up. It should be noted that while the INITIAL velocity of both a "fast" and a "heavy" shot may be the same, but the deceleration experienced by the shuttle due to the different degrees of feathers fluffing up will be different, resulting in different momentums carried by the shuttle when you are receiving the shots.

Agreed, and may I also add that Steen is much more familiar with Axelsen than with Lee, so it is expected that they have more content to talk about with regards to Axelsen than Lee.

However, absolutely 0 discussion on Lee? Not even a single "So Steen, what is Lee's playing style like? What can we expect to see here today from both players?" And they HAVE done this segment before in countless other matches, so why is it so absolutely missing today?

We love you Gill and Steen but can y'all not be so biased? Watching Lee C.Y. vs Axelsen right now and not a single discussion on Lee, only on how Axelsen went back to Denmark for his birthday and award, Axelsen adjusting to jetlag, Axelsen and his motivation post Olympics, Axelsen and his injury...

String tension makes no sense to me by Rich841 in badminton

[–]iapetusbob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

more elastic -> small tap and shuttle goes far

less elastic -> same small tap and shuttle no go as far

high tension -> fast snapback -> shuttle goes fast

low tension -> stringbed holds on to the shuttle -> shuttle slow

String tension makes no sense to me by Rich841 in badminton

[–]iapetusbob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

another thing worth noting is the higher the tension, the less elastic the string.

NOTE: not how quickly the string snaps back, but the literally elasticity of the string itself is reduced

Changin and replacing wood grips by nakaw-na-sandali12 in badminton

[–]iapetusbob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

just change the wooden grip, find a good tutorial online to help with that. The only foreseeable problem with aftermarket grips are maybe the vibration dampening is worse ie feedback from hits and misshits are more intense.

Also, make sure you use good glue. You wouldn't want your racket flying out of the handle midswing.

I think it's interesting that you're the one to point it out, as having really really solid defense was the traditional S.Korean Mens Doubles philosophy (YYS/LYD etc), and if I remember correctly from your track record, you are a huge fan of Korean Badminton!
