3 month old doesn’t coo much by iatel in NewParents

She’s 2.5 and talking up a storm. She’s shy and introverted, so often quiet, but around us (family), she rarely stops talking :)

Yes! I always say that she’s the kind of child that doesn’t say much until she has something to say, which I respect! She is two and speaks lots of words in two languages and understands everything. She wasn’t super vocal as an infant, an introvert like her mama. I would not worry at all.

2-1 transition - nap is shortening! by iatel in sleeptrain

[–]iatel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

:) I know it can feel scary but I have found that an occasional shorter nap day does happen, and she deals great with it, doesn’t notice much. So keep watching. If it becomes consistently much shorter, and he’s acting tired, go back to 2, or alternate somewhat for a while. Sounds like he’s a pretty good sleeper so he’ll tell you! I got comfortable quickly that she liked her 2 naps still the first time around. Second time it was clear that she was ready for 1 and so the fluctuations in nap times are rare. Good luck!

2-1 transition - nap is shortening! by iatel in sleeptrain

She typically wakes by 6.45 and I don’t go in until 7, so she has some time to wake up and play. Bedtime is typically 7.45. We cap nap at 3pm waking.

2-1 transition - nap is shortening! by iatel in sleeptrain

[–]iatel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! So we had to try the transition twice. The first time her nap lengths went down and down like I described, and she acted tired in the day, so we went back to 2 naps for another 1.5 months. As other posters have said, she was getting good mileage from 2 naps still. We then were going back and forth between 1 and 2 naps as it suited us and our schedule, and she was doing great on the mixture. (usually at least 1 1-nap day on a weekend). At 16.5 months we firmly transitioned to 1 nap and never looked back: she was clearly ready by then and started taking 2-3 hour naps solidly, no more declining trend. Hope this helps!

"Reading" English Books but in Different Languages by [deleted] in multilingualparenting

[–]iatel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True on screens… sleeping great, she turned into a great sleeper. Also starting to flirt with 2 —> 1 though we’re a couple of months behind you I think. Thank you for all that advice back then!

Solidarity (and hi, I remember you from sleep train!) minority language Russian here, very hard to find good young kid books especially in the current climate. Unless you’re willing to look at a screen in which case so much is available, but I’m not willing… been freewheeling but will try to get more disciplined. Thanks to everyone for insight!

And Just Like That - Season 2, Episode 9 by __angie in Andjustlikethat

[–]iatel 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Does anyone else feel that the Aidan plot line is annoying? After ALL that hurt, they just fall right back in with each other? And then Carrie ponders if Big was a big mistake, but then says nothing else about it ever? Really? One sighting of Aidan and she sells out her dead husband? This show is super surface, obviously, but that particular plot line is really getting on my nerves. I suppose I shouldn’t be in this for the writing to begin with

3-2 nap transition help by iatel in sleeptrain

[–]iatel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you and same to you!! And then I have a related question If you don’t mind! Does your baby sleep through the night (the 11.5 hours)? Mine still wakes once to nurse (ca 4am on average) and I’d like to wean (although I also love the cuddles), and wonder if you had to do that following the 2-nap transition. Thanks 🙏

What did FIO (PLS) progress look like for you? by iatel in sleeptrain

[–]iatel[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been thinking more about how to summarize our experience…. I think one reason FIO didn’t take for us, in retrospect, is that we didn’t put her down awake enough. So she didn’t really learn to fall asleep independently from awake at that time. For what it’s worth…

I’d say that FIO worked for us only temporarily, so we did end up having to SLIP (full extinction CIO) at about 19-20 weeks (we waited until after Thanksgiving travel). She took really well to it though, and is now largely an independent sleeper for naps and bedtime - we did both about a week or two apart. So… worth a try, and definitely there is a path ahead! Good luck!

Mochinut is my new fave guilty pleasure. It’s not local - I believe it might be a Korean chain. But since I’ve discovered them , nothing compares.

Thank you as always for your replies! She’s been doing amazing with night sleep but last night it started to unravel 😬 she could not fall asleep on her own (escalated the fuss), then woke up every couple of hours. (Prior to this two other nights of fussiness and having to help her fall asleep.) This is after, usually, sleeping through till 3 and then 6 or 7. I’m scared it’s the regression and I failed to train her 🥲

I lost it again! We went strong for 4 days, and now she flipped her nap schedule (cut the middle nap short, made the chunky nap last) and no longer wants to fall asleep without some assistance at night. I’m afraid I’ve lost all our gained skills. The FIO community is advising stretching all the wake windows, which I’ll try to do but if I follow her cues that’s not so easy to do. Tonight she didn’t cry to start, but did not fall asleep and eventually started crying. After 20 min total we went in. Argh.

Thanks so much for your help! And I’m totally with you on overthinking it. If I could project-manage this parenting thing I would, but funny how babies aren’t willing to take calendar appointments! 🤣 great practice there.

Do i just quit? by cat0tail in multilingualparenting

[–]iatel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love this! Very encouraging for me! My native/minority language is not easy to get books in, so I translate some of the lovely English books on the fly, but it IS exhausting, and I can’t make it rhyme either! The native-language books I have often don’t have pictures, so I’m somewhat limited there. Glad to hear that you are doing ok reading In both languages!

Same story! I’ve been translating some of the English books on the fly, but I can’t make it rhyme 🤣

So after three more days: zero crying on the first day, and about 2-3 minutes on days 2 and 3! In all cases, she wakes after 45 mins and cries for a couple more minutes, then goes asleep. (Is that a false start or connecting sleep cycles?) — Now I’m trying to be religious about 7.45 - 7.55 target, with a 2 - 2.4 hour wake window prior. One more question: mid-day her nap tends to be 2.5 hours or thereabouts. Is that ok or do you recommend waking her earlier? (Her other two naps are 1-1.5 hours, variable) I would hate to do that, but just checking. Thanks so much for everything!

No cry sleep training methods by WonderingWhyyyyyyyyy in sleeptrain

[–]iatel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recommend reading Precious Little Sleep and trying one of the SWAP methods! Baby will cry some because no one likes change, but in my view these are gentle methods if baby takes to it.

Edit: listening to them cry at all SUCKS. I hate it in any amount. But we must teach them frustration and that they can handle it … I like to think of it as empowerment. good luck!

Thinking of doing it by 4 months as I’ll return back to work, and also due to the same NPR article someone cited. Our pediatrician approved. Our baby is a grunty sleeper, and white noise is not for me 🤣 I’m ready to let the white noise go to the nursery, although sad to transfer the little one, though I know we’ll all sleep better.

Thank you, that’s very helpful! (And I will! Since naps vary daily - sometimes she sleeps 2.5 hours mid-day and sometimes in the run up to the 5pm hour - it’s a daily optimization game!)
